Default Tuned Greddy 18G, whats wrong? help

So I went to have my 96 GSR tuned today at the local shop that has a mustang dyno. Currently I have the Greddy kit (18g), Greddy intercooler, Greddy Type-S BOV, and Greddy Evo exhaust. I'm also running a 2.5 inlet/outlet carsound high flow cat. Well I was stuck with the "blue box" that was untunable on the 7.8psi. With all of this on, I put down 216shp and 157 torque and when I took it to the track, I ran a 13.957 @ 102.01, not bad.

Well today comes and I have my walbro 255 fuel pump already in and now I have some RC 550's and Uberdata, yay, I'm going to make more power. Well after he was tuning it and getting the a/f money (I saw the graph) I was only putting out 205whp but my torque went up to 162. This was on the 7.8psi from Greddy. Well we went to install the boost controller b/c we were going to up it to 10psi but for some reason the boost controller wasn't working(wouldn't stop from over-boosting)

My question is, why did I LOSE hp but gain a little torque? The tuner said he raised Vtec to about 5000 and I'm not sure where the secondaries are. The hp curve is VERY linear and there were no dips in it. Would I only start making more hp when I turn up the boost? I know I need to get a 2.5" downpipe and that will come in the summer, but I thought I would be making around 260whp. Any ideas?

I can only say the tune of the Uberdata is set conservatively. On my old Greddy setup w/ the 1st Generation Blue Box(untunable) w/ a V-AFC on a mustang Dyno and pulled 260whp at 190ft/lbs on 8.5 psi of boost. Hell, I didn't even have a boost controller.

Any leaks you can think of that may have developed?

sounds like a tuning issue, go back over the map with your tuner

just for reference, back before my built block, I put down 217whp and 140 ft lbs with a jdm b16 block (10:4 to 1) and a type r head on a mustang dyno and 7psi... I dont think your #'s are as bad as you think, I would bet they would be in the area of 240-250 whp on a dynojet.

i have found that mustang dynos read way off (imo) we put a stock dx up on the dyno and it made 177ft/lbs of torque and 90hp. (numbers this random and off continued through the night) so i dont really like mustang that much

The tuning was a little conservative since this is my daily driver and I dont want to blow up the motor just yet. I guess it sounds about right for the turbo then.

The A/F ratio started out around 13.5, then dropped into the 12's, then was in the mid to high 11's for about the last 1000 rpm. So I guess it is a little conservative. Any ideas where I should have vtec set at b/c right now its at 5000. Would dropping it any lower help get some more power out since the 18g isn't that big of a turbo?

The only other problem is that it does spike a little bit. When I would gun it (and when they did on the dyno), it would spike up to 10psi and then drop back down to the 7.8. If i up the boost to 10psi, will the boost controller help stick it right at 10 or whill I be spiking to around 12?

thanks for the help

"i know i need to run a 2.5" downpipe"....so i can assume you have a 2" downpipe right now? That is what's holding some of your power back.

Whenever i look through threads that deal with greddy turbos i always find that the post ends right about here. No one can 100% cure this boost spiking it seems, unless you go with an external one.
Lots of people have problems dealing with boostspike associated with the internal wastegate on this kit for some reason.
There have been a select number of people who have posted some really nice torque curves with this turbo, and thats why its interested me so much.

The only solution i've seen is that you should try taking the vacuum line off the turbo, pluging it, and running it off the brake booster to get a better vacuum source.
There's been a couple members on here who have ported their wastegate 1mm to allow more airflow with some success.
You can also take appart the internal wastegate and set it higher manually, but that's pretty much what your manual boost controller is doing.

Other suggestions would be appreciated, as ill probably be posting the same question in a few months time.

Right now the downpipe is 2.25" which goes into my 2.5" high flow cat and then to my Greddy exhaust which is 2.36".

Boost is addicting and now I just wish I had a bigger turbo. But that would be too much money to redo my setup. I just wish there was an easy way to fix this. Maybe I should call Greddy and see if they have found a way to get rid of the boost spike??

When you dyno'd it the second time, was it the same day? If not perhaps the weather condtions were that much worse (hotter, humid)?

that's cause the shop did not calibrate the dyno correctly. did he have you put it in 4th gear to get it to a 1 to 1 gear ratio???? if so then he is an idiot. i have seen it fucked up that way before

the cat was put in back in august and was brand new so im pretty sure it wasn't that.

i haven't turned up the boost yet because the boost controller wasn't holding the boost for some reason. it just let it boost all it wanted. but when i put one on, it will be the Turbo XS manual boost controller

and the car was first dynoed with the "blue box" back in august when i had the kit put on and it was pretty warm out that day. I just had it tuned yesterday and the weather was 57*

and yes, i was using 93 octane

keep the suggestions coming

you mean to tell me you arent supposed to dyno cars in 4th gear? mine was dynoed in 4th gear on a mustang dyno

[QUOTE=Burke]

that's cause the shop did not calibrate the dyno correctly.

that would be my guess, though i dont think the 3rd or 4th gear would matter w/ proper set up/calibration on a mustang dyno. I believe a mustang dyno is not only a better all around tuning tool (due to variable load), but a more accurate representation of what the car is putting down (if properly set up/operated). And yes, mustang dyno #'s are normally lower than a dynojets.

...as for the 170ft-lbs on a stock d series, who says honda = no torque lol

When i had my greddy kit(18g), it put down 249hp/219tq on a mustang dyno @ 12psi with 2 1/2" piping on an stock Ls block and B16 head. Ran 12.9@108 on a delsol. So, your numbers are about right. Those kits don't make too much power though..

hybrixt: his numbers don't sound anything right compared to yours. You have lower compression about 9.5:1 and he has 10:1...but running a bit lower boost. He even had uberdata and a walbro 255lph pump and you ran 50hp, and about 50 lbs more tq.
You must have a boost leak or something?
And change up your vacuum source to your internal wastegate.

Something is wrong with your setup...or your tune!

4th gear isnt 1 to 1 on our cars, therefore making all the readings wack

well when my car was stock, it put down 148whp and 109 torque on the same mustang dyno that I put out 216whp and 157 torque after the turbo install and those were all 4th gear pulls. I thought you were always supposed to do it in 4th gear. What gear are you supposed to dyno in?

and hybrixt, do you have any boost spike? if not, how did you fix it?

Yup, mine used to spike to 13-14 then drop back to 11, i tried everything and i couldn't fixe it, that's was one of the reasons why i sold it.
I had a 255lph fuel pump too and i tune it with crome and 450cc dsm injectors, there was nothing wrong with the tuning everything was perfect i guess it just didn't want to make any more power due to my restrictive exhaust.
I think the wastegate it's just crap.
About the 50hp/tq difference, i guess it could be 'cause of the Ls/Vtec setup?
Mustang dynos read way different than dynojets, there is at least a 10% difference, so i was probably making around 270hp 240tq on a dynojet that's just my thoughts 'cause the car ran pretty good for being a not very efficient turbo.
It was fun, but time for an sc61 upgrade and forged internals..
