Transmission question LS/GSR hybrid setup for high HP setup
I'm in a dilemma here, I'm trying to get a tranny together for my new setup. I'll be making around 500whp on pump 700ish on race gas, I want a setup where I can drive this thing but still be a beast. I have 2 transmissions currently, a GSR with a 2nd that grinds and 3rd pops out, and I have a perfect shape LS. Since 1st and 2nd are both the same in each tranny, which gear set and final should I go with? Use the LS or GSR final drive, 64t or 66t? I know the LSDs for the LS are considerably cheaper, I just want some advice in which direction to head here. Thanks in adavance.

youd be better of with the GSR trans.... I would do a rebuild on the GSR, and while you are doing that run the LS for the time being

Well the car is gonna be down for a little while more, so I can get that together in no time and just sell the LS if I want to. I just want to make sure I have the best ratio's for the car. It's a street car and will see the track too, but I want to have the drivability on the highway at cruising speeds and not be sitting in/at boost at 5000 RPMs, I had an ITR tranny and sold it for a considerable amount of cash, so I have some money to work with now.

If you plan on running 500+ on the street, I would go with the LS. There are gonna be die hard GSR Tranny people BUT with the LS's longer gears, the tires willl still spin but not as hard and you can cruise 80 mph <4k RPM. Just food for thought.

ditto. And you might be at high rpm on the highway...but your not going to be in boost unless your on the gas. If your just cruising you wont be building boost. Had a gsr tranny in my ls-t and didnt like it. Now I have a ls tranny for my 600whp ls-v build. I liked the shorter ratio of the gsr, but I drive alot of highway, and like you said the lsd is cheaper for the ls.

Re: (PandaHatch)
what is he car going to be used for?
if drag racing then do not use the LS... the long gears are a dissadvantage they will hurt you in the long run.
go with the GSR you wont regret it

The car will be at the track, but will also be driven a lot on the street. I remember reading a few posts from Earl when they switched the B16/ITR geared tranny in their car and used an LS and dropped .3 off their E.T. due to not loosing traction as much down the track.

well it is all up to you on what you want to do.... I know that with a all motor car you dont want the LS trans because it causes you to drop out of Vtec and slows you down

I know this. For a street car an LS cant be beaten, I have seen 80mph in 2nd gear before.....
BTW.... what would a 4.4 do in an LS Tranny?????

your dropping out of vtec shifting at 9k???...
i was shifting my ls tranny at about 8200-8400 at the track and the only gear i dropped below 5000 rpms was on the 1-2 shift. the 3-4 shift i came into gear into the 6000 rpm range if i remember correctly
