Default torn between 81mm bore and 84mm bore - please help

For our roundabout 500hp setup on b16a I want to let my block sleeve next week.
But up to now, I´m not sure if I should take 81mm bore or the 84mm.
My thought is, that the cylinderwall of the 84mm-sleeves is a bit (1.5mm) thinner than the 81mm. So I thought the 84mm-sleeves are not so strong.
What do you think about that.

Is there a good benefit from that higher displacement? I thoght that can give the turbo (gt30r ar0.6) a better flow.
(The price is the same, just the pistons are a little more expensive.)

it might be better to go with like a 83mm sleeve also the more displacement will help spool a bigger turbo

83mm is good and safe enough for a lil bit of error.

83mm gets my vote for the b16

I chose to stay 81mm on my 1.8 block for simplicity, piston weight, and room for error. And besides you can make as much power with 81mm as with 84mm but it might just require a little more boost. Although, bigger bore would probably generate more torque.

here is my .02

i would stay away from large bores from the "beginning". get the block sleeved to an 81mm bore. that way, if your engine gets screwed up, you always have room to bore it out to the next larger size, instead of possibly having to scrap a block, or possibly get it sleeved again, because you bored it out too big from the "beginning"

sleeve cost ? ~ around 1000 ?

bore and hone ~ 40 per cyl ?

you make the call.

damn, if you start at 81mm then you can blow it up 5-6 times on that block! I'd start at at least 83mm, you need all the help you can get with that b16!

haha tru that.

Im not sure that the "thicker the sleeve" argument is really a valid one. Who, if anyone, has had problems with an 84mm iron sleeve that was caused by it being too thin?

I hope not to make any errors. But you all are right it is the safer way with smaller than 84mm.
I come from Germany and so I have to send the block back to the US if I can´t bore or hone it again. Thanks.
Other question:
Arias or JE pistons? If possible for a CR of roundabout 8:1 or 8.2:1?

right now im running 84.5mm GE sleeves on my GSR block, it creates good torque and it should help to spool my turbo really quick once it gets on..

I started at 84mm... if I were to do it again maybe 83mm... I figure if you blow it up more then 2-3 times then you need to do something else anyway...

As far as pistons I'd stay away from Arias. It's been my experience that they tend not to fit as well. They usually expand more than other pistons so arias makes then slightly smaller on the diameter to compensate. This causes a certain amount of rattle when they are cold. Anyway wasn't really satisfied with them. I much prefer weisco, Endyn roller wave, CP. Just my opinion.

you will be happy with 83mm. For a b16, I would really look into going bigger than stock bore.

I use Arias all day long and I have NEVER had a problem with them. I have made 165 WHP all the way to 1200 WHP on Arias pistons and they have never let me down.

You say that Arias makes their pistons smaller than everyone else; that statement is total BS. Almost every manufacturer uses the same material ( some offer 2 different materials; 4032 hi-silicon or 2618 non-silicon aluminum ) and the growth rate is the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. Skirt design, skirt cam & taper, application, all of these things can affect the way they suggest clearance. I use a lot of piston, from every brand, and I have found Arias to be the best there is, hands down!!!!!!!

Arias gets a big

All I'm say'n is that it's been my experience that Arias pistons didn't have quite the fit and finish that othe pistons have had. Ordered some arias ran them for a couple months then ordered up some weisco and had better results. I'm sure lots of people have had good experience with Arias otherwise they wouldn't be in business.

Oh by the way Props to Golden Eagle on my B18 84mm sleeves. Very nicely done.

Thanks for the good words. I hope your set-up is working out well for you.

Everyone has their preference in pistons, it boils down to what you like really. I happen to like Arias, some swear by CP, Wiseco, whatever.
In the end, for me it's Arias everytime!!! Helped get us into the 7's!!

Setup is working out well so far. Shooting for around 650whp we'll see if it happens once I get everything setup for a high boost tune.

NOT considering the point about being able to bore it out again or not.........

Why can't you go even bigger than 84mm...85mm, 86mm+, etc for a fully well built turbo motor? Is it possible to significantly increase displacement this way, and/or by changing stroke/rod length as well?

When you find how how much displacement you want. You first start choosing your tubo by compressor housing. Using this formula CFM=CID/1,728xrpm/2xVE.
