Default Ticking noise durring Vtec... Bad LMA's or Rocker Arms.

I have finished rebuilding my LSVTEC and finished tunning my low cans. Started working on my high cams yesturday. I noticed that sometimes when I go into VTEC that I hear a clicking/ticking noise. It is fine when I am on the low cams, it only happens on the high cams. I have a 1995 GSR head with Type R cams. Could this be the LMA's or Rocker Arms?

is it just one click as soon as vtec engages? if so its just the pin locking into the rockers

Na. I do hear that one. That is a loud click. When Vtec starts in a hear the exhaust get throatier (no cat and 3" exhaust) but I sometimes hear the clicking. I was thinking it could be detonation but my A/F is fine and I have very conservative timing for the first map (1* per psi). The clicking is a little bit softer than the the engagement click.

If a rocker arm is bad, it should make noise all the time. LMA's are supposed to quiet things in non vtec mode, not make noise in vtec

That is what I was thinking after reading some other posts. The engine runs perfect outside of VTEC. Maybe it is just the aggresive lift of the Type Rs and i have a new (~500 miles using the low cams) stiff REV valve train on the head. Maybe it is just the springs and valves getting broken in with the higher lift?

Think I need to take the head apart and look at the Rocker Arms or should I drive it for a little while and see if it gets better? I only drove it last night and this morning and I hear the ticking intermentantly about 5-6 times. It seems to want to tick at around 5000+RPM.

my car seems to do the same damn thing. Last time it was the LMA, not being in properly, but it has come back, and I know mine are in correctly now. I am incredibly stumped. Only goes to like 15-12 psi now, use to hit 18, no boost leaks or anything.. it is weird. Only 5500 RPM and higher on a single cam.

So do you go over 5500 RPM anyway. It is more of an annoyance or could it potentially cause damange?

i can go over it, but it sounds like something in the head is straining horribly. So I just stay out of the throttle. I don't get full boost till 5500 anyway. So I just go with no boost for ever.

So hopefully a new head will fix it. SOHC are cheaper.

I know this guy didn't realize the thread was 4 years old, I did however, and I'm still replying for future reference anyway.

When my pistons melted on the intake side on my F20c, yet the engine was still running, everytime vtec engaged we heard a ticking noise. it sounded like detonation, but the tune was too conservative for it to be detonating.
After the motor finally blew and i pulled it apart, i found that the intake valves were hitting the part of the piston that melted back into the valve relief cutout on the piston. that's what the ticking was. sounds like a similar situation or if you didn't check piston to valve clearance before the build this could be a possibility.
