thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
I know that they have somewhat of a bastard flange and that near no one makes manifolds to fit these turbos but Im just wondering why they aren't used more often. we all know they have a really quick spool up and are capable of pretty good power (as much as 400hp)
Im debating on making a manifold for a evo 8 or evo 9 turbo I just wanna get some feed back as to how it would work on a rod/ piston d16.

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
There is a guy on here making proper manifolds for them. Years ago there was a guy not to far from me running fantastic (mid 11's) times with an older 16g on a d16z crx.
They can be had really cheap, but sometimes the cost of making one work (properly) outweighs the cheap turbo price.

ya I was wondering if it was just too much work for some honda owners. I am definitely considering doing a 10.5 evo 9 turbo on a z6. I just wanted to make sure that it would work well with what I have cause I read that they don't work good on a turbo gsr due to the lack of cfm or something to do with having to run higher boost to get the hp you want.

It's just necessarily what is going to be best for a high Hp drag application. Nothing fits every application, if you building the block your probably hoping for something above 350 this isn't your best choice.
What are you lpoking for out of this set-up? Daily?

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
do a 9 turbo and crank that bitch up to 42psi!
the funny thing is we r doing 34psi on a gt3076 and everyone says it is max
but the evo guys r doing 42psi on a stock 9 turbo.........wtf
if only we had an extra turbo i would crack that 40 mark just to see how it will do...
-u should the powerband on this gt30 its like an average of 570whp from 5k to 8k

it will be a dd and I want no more then 300whp with the quickest spool possible on a 1.6l sohc. Im just looking for a good powerband without buying a $1200 turbo.

I have made a revision to my evo8/9 B/D series manifold. It still is AC, powersteering, and stock radiator compatible on almost every chassis (half rad EF).
I have built 4 of these manifolds and every one has had great results with amazing fast, smooth power. One of the GSR setups was running close to 300whp for almost 100,000 miles.
Stock GSR engines hit around 275whp on 11psi (gate pressure, 10.5, 8)
Stock D15 hit 220whp on 11 psi (gate pressure, 10.5, 8)

Here is a picture installed on a d16y5 in a 1996 Civic Hx. I was able to dual backdoor this setup very easily but full tuning was never done. Engine is messy and dirty i know, sorry.

I'd like to see more pictures of the DP routing and turbo placement if you have any please.

that manifold looks very nice, can you pm me a price on one, all I need is the mani. as I can build my own down pipe and everything else for my setup.

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
I think 400 is pretty attainable with water/meth and a 9 turbo . And the possibilities are pretty endless with stock frame upgrades like Forced Performance Green, Reds, and Blacks. While expensive they offer direct bolt in turbos that will support up to 600+. Imagine that with AC and powersteering with the transient response and efficiency of a true twin scroll turbo

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
That is pretty funny, didn't even know those existed. The turbo would not perform in the same manner due to the open manifold though. Also wondering how this adapter situates the turbo and how long the cast HF manifold will hold up this heavy turbo.
I would steer away from buying an Ebay evo manifold. For starters they are usually **** material, and the headflange port spacing between the Evo and Dseries are radically different. Sure you can buy one for $150 but I would imagine the whole thing would have to be cut apart and rewelded. And like my dad always told me, you can't make chicken salad out of chicken ****...
Evo on top, D series on bottom
If i were you I would just spend the $250 on high quality flanges and sch40 stainless elbows and start from scratch. These evo turbos are always fun to build off of because of the challenge of having to make a manifold with divided pairing with the odd ports and still have adequate clearances everywhere. In fact I just prototyped a setup for FWD SR20 Nissans (ser, g20) that fit 8s and 9s and keep factory AC, powersteering, and stock radiators. Should be a bomb-proof 300hp kit, im excited
But yeah, if you decide to build your own manifold make a build thread in the welding and fab! I love these little turbos and its cool seeing what people do with them.
Good luck and happy boosting

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
nice and thanks for the input. iv been thinking about building my own mani with sch 40. I kinda wanna go with a smaller pipe diameter to see if that will help spool time. im not in a huge rush to jump into anything because I still have to build my little z6 bottom end to handle what I put to it.

Re: thoughts on evo 8 or evo 9 turbos?
Yeah, I really like using the small stuff, 1 1/4. Thats what I used on this manifold and thats what I designed the Full Race T3/T4 Divided Evo 8/9 manifolds with. I have personally seen those have no issues making huge horsepower numbers (700 whp+) with that massive step in port size to runner diameter.
Gotta love D series. I have a fully built a6/z6 I'm itching to throw into my crx with one of my setups and really turn one of these turbos up. That project is on hold until I complete my Evo X turbo K series topmount (top secret).
Keep us tuned in man
