To those that have blown their motors from too much boost, did you turbo get taken out too?
Hi guys,
With my turbo install coming up I'm trying to decide how much boost I want to set my Apexi AVCR for. I'm not gonna be on a dyno so I dont know exactly how much power I'll be making. I figure I'd just run 8-10 PSI and assume that I'll make the average amount of power.
But I had a question for those of you guys that have blown motors due to running too much boost. Have any of you guys have engine fragments make it out the turbine and damage it in some way?
My turbo CRX just went from being my only car to my second/project car. So I'm gonna run 8-10 psi instead of just 5-6 which what I was planning on doing before. Basically I want to try and run it until it blows os close to it, but I dont wanna do that if a blown motor will take out me turbo too. Cause then I'm paying to get the block resleeved AND paying for a new turbo.
So what do you guys think?
Thanks

I'm going to be sleeving and building the motor anyways. I dont want to blow it up on purpose, but I want to push the motor to it's limits. I just wanted to make sure that if the motor goes, it doesn't take the turbo along with it.

Yeah it does happen.... Debris can get into the turbo and destroy it. Try to run your oil feed with a oil filter sandwich adapter so that the oil will be filtered oil. To be even safer, run an inline oil filter before the turbo.

Actually I was talking about engine fragments making it out of the engine into the manifold and going through the turbines. I used to own an RX-7 and IIRC when the apex seals blew and fragmented they would cause damage to the turbines when they went outthe exhaust ports.

Re: (Johnyquest)
yeah, I just wanted to know how common it was to have fragments spitting out. I guess if I end up detonating and blowing a piston then my chances are higher for blowing a turbo from bits of leftover piston.

its 50/50
either fragments will be ejected....or they wont. duh.
you're taking your chances either way. I'd just be prepared for the worst if you're going to play with fate the way you're saying you want to.

yah, I guess the turbo I'm using wil only be worth around $300-$400 when it's used. So I might as well see what I can do with it muahahaha. Anyways, I probably wont chance it. At the most I might run 9-10 PSI on this T04E 60 trim and see what happens.
