Thinking.... Used 98 Ls engine plus AEM stand alone or build up the block, whats better
I am on a limited budget and my motor just went. I was going to redo the whole block with pistins rods bearings machine work, bla bla, 3-4 grand later and i realized i really dont have that. I was thinking maybe it is better to get a new used 96+ engine in good shape and put my drag III kit on that and i can get the new AEM stand alone computer system from a guy i know for about 1000 plus my 310 RC injectors, than i just need to buy 440cc's and dyno tune. So i figure 600-800 for the motor, 1000 for the computer, 300 for injectors, 400-600 labor they said. That would be a lot cheaper than building the block and would give me a lot more power i think than i had just now at 9 lbs with 310ccs and just a vortech VMU. Where would i be whp around with the AEM 440s and about 10-12 lbs boost? Im hoping for 250-260 after the dyno, is this possible?? I might go this root becuase it is WAY cheaper than building the block when i look at it i dont think its even worth it to build the block up.....yet. let me know, sorry for my quanity of posts lately im just in a bind! thanks
Or is hondata better?
I also was definatly thinking of gettin a inline pro head gasket to throw on there as well just to help with the safety of the motor, where could i order one of those as well?

Your motor pricing sounds optimistic for a 96+ motor in good condition.
What is wrong with your motor? They aren't that hard to fix with just stock/oem parts.

I would try to find a used B18 or B20 to throw in. Keep your old block and buy all the nice parts you want for it slowly as you get your $$$ together.

Well i have a few very good junk yards by me and i have gotten prices in the past on them, there was a 98 engine with 20k somethin miles and they only wanted 750 for that without the tranny.
I believe i spon a bearing or some thing along those lines, if i wanted to just fix my block all back to stock with oem parts it prob would cost me more after labor and machine shop work than just to get a whole new engine or just a block.

Well it really isnt' that hard to fix stuff yourself with a helm manual. I'd verify what is wrong with your motor before you go buying anything.

I'd rather do the Block. The AEM unit is of no use if you cant boost higher than the capability of the stock block anyways. for About $2000.00 you can get a block redone with pistons and rods. thats with new bearings and everything.
With the built block you'd be able to go 15lbs on the stock ECU.

voltron yea thats what im planning to do if i get the stand alone and a used engine, keep my block and everything and just order parts as i get money for them so within a year or two i have a fully build bottom end along with a stand alone sytem and a nice turbo kit. I think i made my mind up about getting the used motor now and putting it in with the AEM stand alone, i heard its not bad, hopefully i can pull some good number out of it.

i already have the rods ordered and they are coting me 375 (eagle rods), than i have to take my whole kit off without the correct tools, not knowing how to do the axle exactly and all stuff like that without an engine hoist or anything so most likely i am going to have to pay someone to do that (250) than im gonna need to find out what pistons and bearings to order from the machine shop so that will be (100) than bore 20th over and other machine work and by the time they put the pistons bearings and everything in (500 from them at least) Now i have the block done with nothing to put the engine back in my car (another 300-400 labor) now i have to reinstall my whole turbo kit which im not sure i can do good (another 250-400) now that is not including a new head gasket or now im still going to need bigger injectors than 310s to go any higher than 12 lbs, correct? it just seems like it going to add up to way too much, plus im not sure if my block is in all of the best condition, im confused and really dont know what to do yet.
