Are these CP pistons in "great" shape? *PICS*
The guy's local, and he's selling them for SUPER cheap. I've never bought pistons before, but I'm interested to see how good of a condition these pistons are actually in.
Thoughts?

More detailed pictures of the side skirts and valve reliefs. What's super cheap?

like everyone says, you need to see the skirts..they do look clean in the pics as much as you can tell. I'd also want to take a better look at the wrist pins.

in my opinion, do not mess with internals. Do not buy used internal engine parts. Even if its a hell of a deal. That not spending the extra $350 could lead to a blown motor, sitting on the side of the road in the middle of no where and paying to get it towed. If it was my motor, spend the extra $300+ to get quality pistons if your building the motor for boost. but if not boost, then new oem pistons will work. Just dont get used internals.

I used to live on the border of Blaine and Coon Rapids FTW!!!
I'm gonna take a look at these pistons hopefully, and if they're good I'll probably offer like $100 or so. If he is firm on his price, I'll just walk away. Not worth anything more than about $100 to me.

You really can't buy a piston by looks. It must be measured and touched to be sure. Don't forget, you will need a new set of CP matching rings and pin locs...so build that into your cost, also.

um, why were they pulled in the first place??
oh and...
rings?? you dont need no stinking rings!!! lol, dunno why I wanted to say that but yeah, replace the rings and pin locks...if he even supplies the old pin locks
better to just buy new

Bump, looking for more opinions and input
What do a set of new rings and pin locks run?
EDIT: They were pulled because the guy went with a 84mm setup and parted out his 81.5mm setup.

1. It's a bit suspicious that he didn't show pics of the sideskirts. That's ebay style.
2. A new ring set is around $100. So you aren't getting the pistons for $150, it's more like $250.
3. Only an idiot would sell you those for $100. I see used CP pistons like that sell on ebay every day of the week for $200. Heck, you could probably buy them for $150 and sell them for profit.
4. I've never bought used pistons and never would. Conversely, I've never once bought a new set of rods. I'm all about used rods. The difference is that rods are not a wear item. They either work or they fail. Pistons, however, wear out with use. The sideskirts scuff, the lip between the top compression ring and piston top gets worn and porous, and the rings are a one-time-use item. I don't agree with blatant statements such as "don't buy used internals," but I certainly would not buy used pistons.

Re: (JDMs1eeper)
if the rest of ur setup is budjet get em. ie no sleeved block, other used parts, ghetto hmt turbosetup.
but if everything in ur setup is going to be new, i would steer awway from used ****.
why cheap out only only one thing. the most important part of the engine?

Re: (nickromeo)
I bought a set of used JEs once that had about 300 passes on the dyno and 50 or so passes down the track.. Came out of my boys 700+ hp race motor... Put them into my old LS with stock rods and stock sleeves, and ran the **** out of them for about 2 years... the sc61 on 30+psi finally took its toll and cracked a sleeve, but the pistons (and stock rods) still looked great (other than the scoring the sleeve left on the cyl. 2 piston)..
Moral of the story is, aint nothin wrong with used parts if you know what you are doin and trust the seller...

Used pistons should be inspected carefully by a machinist who has all the proper tools to do so.
If a professional machinist says theyre ok and they measure out, i see no reason they couldnt be re-used...
Rings and wristpin locks however must be replaced...
