Thermal Wrapped Ramhorn - Gimme a BallPark On How Hot Itll be?
So Ive got a big problem with my new turbo setup. My ramhorn manifold on my turbo d16 touches my hood. It was very close to touching then I wrapped it and its now touching or very close to it.
I have a fiberglass predator hood. im scared this thing is gonna melt, or make the paint bubble. How how will this manifold get when its wrapped, I did the to of the runners very close wrapped so its nice and thick.
The reason i asked is because I may buy a welding blanket and attach it to the hood for the extra protection. Now they vary in price based on temp, one is 600 degree, 1000, 1200 etc. The heavy ones are thick, I dont have romm for thick, get it?
So who can ballpark a temp for me with a manifold running a good hard few pulls at full throttle and 16 pounds? Can you touch it?
Thanks

i dont know how much the heat wrap helps, but i'm sure that the pipe is as hot as if not close to how how the egts are. and i know that i saw over 1200 degrees alot of times

i have the same exact set up and problem... just got my car repainted about 2 weeks ago and havent seen a problem exept my hood gets too hott to touch in one place... before the wrap though my hood changed colors and faded fast... the heat wrap helped alot, id say with the heat wrap and the stock heat shield on the hood u should be ok...

I dont have a stock heatshield
Ive read threads were people said they can touch there manifold after driving when it was wrapped.....
Like how hot will the outside wrap on the manifold be after running, i highly doubt 1200 degrees

Recently we were making 26lb pulls on the dyno. I was able to touch the downpipe and not burn myself after a pass. Thermal wrap works. Is it going to prevent a fiberglass hood from being warped/damaged? I dont know. If it's indeed touching the hood it's going to be hard to get wrap on the exhaust manifold.

The manifold is already wrapped and I can shim the hood at the back where the hidges are so I can gain a little height
Im just worried about tempatures for now

If it touching it will cook it the heat just takes longer to go through you don't want it touching. Screw up the rubber grommets.

The heat just doesnt take longer to go through, the wrap keeps it inside and would stay at a certain temp, I just need to know what that temp is

when you touch the wrap it takes a while before the heat transfers onto you try it and see.

dei exhaust tunnel sheilding. Its thin enough to put on underside of hood but thick enough to protect from the heat.
I pu tthis stuff on my stock 94 hatch hood directly above my ramhorn mani. No problems ever and I can touch the top of the hood where the sheilding is after many many runs, the rest of the hood, you cannot touch its so hot so this **** does work.
It looks similar to OEM stuff that they put on the firewall. Especially vw's.

I dont like the wrap for many reasons, But it does work well.
I tried ceramic coating this time around. I hope it works like planned

This is what I plan on getting as well. I have heard from many people it works great! How big of a piece did you buy?

Re: Thermal Wrapped Ramhorn - Gimme a BallPark On How Hot Itll be? (ladysman)
smaller one. like 21 X 20.
I thermal coated mani and exhaust housing from a local place called hyperkote. DO a search, I was even in a thread about thermal coatings just a few days ago.
IMHO spend the cash and have mani done at swain tech, get the exhaust tunnel shield, and if you really want, get a thermal blanket for the turbine side of the turbo from a place like boostlogic.com or others.....(I don't like the DEI turbo thermal blanket)

Only thing bad about thermal wrap is that if you leave it on too long , it will cause your stuff to crack. It happened to my downpipe

It takes years to crack if at all if you use stainless, its all in moisture
Welding blankets say 600 degrees, will that be enough if its touching a heatwrapped manifold?
