Default Techedge "broken 10.5" troubles...

..~~**Just to start oout I have been researching Boosted lude's posts and that's how I got to the following state below I';ve tested everything and it still doesn't work for me, read below and please post if you have any amswers, thanks**~~..

I have the v1.5 and just installed it. Now when I first started it, it was a broken 10.5 so I checed the boards and also Honda-tech and they said it might be the sensor not connected right, I tried it replugged it in a couple of times, everything is good on the sensor. Still the broken 10.5... Someone said it might be beacause it was cold, I warmed it up and still nothing... I checked for broken wires (from what I see) there are none. I checked the voltage between pin 6 (gnd) and pin 7 (vout) and with just the ignition switched on, not started up, it was 2.47v. Can you please tell me where you think I might have a mistake???? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Later,

Sean C.

how cold is it in your area right now, just out of curiosity? also, did you assemble the kit yourself?

If it's cold (INSIDE) it does this. They've tracked it down to a bad pick of
op-amps with a low range of operating temperatures..

Try heating it up.. I mean you have to wait until the inside is warmed up...

In my car, when the weather's around 30-40degrees.. I have to have the heat on full for about 30 minutes until the unit heats up. What will also effect is if it is dark.
The photosensor effects the amount of current/voltage that the op-amp gets, and that effects what the temp range is.

VERY Annoying, but people have fixed this problem by replacing the op-amp with a better one... I think the chip is like 2-4 bucks.

thats exactly why i asked him
i bought a bunch of the new op-amps at one time to save on the handling charge, etc. i still have two extras left if anyone is interested. i'm selling them for $7 shipped in the US. email me if you are interested: warez@mn.rr.com

otherwise, another thing to check is if you soldered the LM431 correctly (thats why i asked if you built it). it is a common mistake, but be sure to study the assembly instructions CLOSELY.

i bought the prebuilt unit, i live in az so its not too cold here. It worked fine at first but then took a crap or something. Sometimes itll work after a while. What are these opamp chips or whatever you guys are talking about?

they're a little 8-pin chip that is found in the 5301 display. basically the original display comes with a chip that only works in warmer climates. but if its above 50 deg F then that shouldnt be your problem.

does the chip need to be soldered in? it is possible that its below 50F here, ive only been using the car at night so its a little cooler here.

... did you read this guy's response ... I would say do the same thing, calibration can be off especailly when buying kit w/o w/b o2 sensor ... also goto the techedge yahoo bulletin board and post.

no, it just pops right into a socket. i include simple instuctions with a picture. it only takes a screwdriver to open up the case and remove the boards.

if you want to be sure this is your problem, try turning on your heater and placing the box in front of it for 10-15 mins. also, once its warmed up, shine a light on the photosensor on the face of the display. if doing one of both of these works, then your problem is the chip that we're talking about.

yeah, everything is calibrated correctly and ive had automapping working, but the only problem is the display. I cant really do the heater test due to a lack of a heater in my car. If i shine a light on the display it should work right? I dont know if I understood that part of your post right. Thanks for the replies guys.

well after much frustration, i narrowed it down to the following pattern:

if its really cold, it just wont work and displays the 10.5

if its starting to warm up, it will only work when the photocell sees light. if its dark, it still wont work.

if its fully warm, then it is not light dependent.

well i found out last night that it was the chip. I just rubbed the back of the display with my hand for a little while to warm it up and it magically started working again. That would be cool if you could just give us a part number or something so we can go and just get one from somewhere. There is a huge electronics store here in town where i know they'd have it. Unless you want to make profit off it or something then i'll send you a check

digikey is the only place that i and others have found that carries the proper one. its a TLC2272AI that sells for about $2. however, with a handling charge of $5 and shipping, it was cheaper for us (the techedge yahoo group) to have one person (me) do a "group buy" on them and re-ship to everyone. so i ordered a couple extra in case someone came along later and needed one.

so, highbrid and echo999:
IM me right away as to if you are in or not, as there are people on the yahoo board who want these last two chips. i thought i'd give h-t priority, but if you're not interested, let me know asap so i can sell them to those who need them.

thanks
kevin

If you can't paypal, which one is it exactly?

There are:

TLC2272AID $1.38 for 1
TLC2272AIDR $1.38 for 1
TLC2272AIDR $0.704 in quantities of 2500 or more
TLC2272AIP $1.38 for 1
