Only half right. You should run the vehicle and and hold the compressor wheel for a minute or two. Bumping the starter a few times won't provide the volume necessary.

Re: Switched turbo can i start it?
On a fresh motor build I always hold the compressor wheel on first start up.
All of you people act like it will take your finger off, not at idle.... I can hold/stop a compressor wheel with one finger. The exhaust will still move through the housing without the wheel turning

I'm not willing to take that chance
I wonder how manufactures get though this, I know they don't have a process where someone holds the wheel and someone else starts the vehicle...maybe I went to far with this

Re: Switched turbo can i start it?
I've done it multiple times, no issues.
Remember it's not directly coupled to the movement of the exhaust gasses.
Its like stopping a ceiling fan with your hand

Re: Switched turbo can i start it?
more good info. personally i primed the line where oil was coming out on a brand new oil change....worked for me. also its not sketch to hold the compressor wheel TOO much. but some hondas start and rev to 2500rpm. that would be hard!

Maybe "TheShodan" will chime in to support me on this one. You people can do as you please, I only purchase new turbos anyways.

I don't quite see an advantage to holding the turbo. With this logic, every cold start would have to follow the same procedure. I hold them with the drain facing up and pour some extra oil in just for good measure.

Re: Switched turbo can i start it?
Nobody said you had to do it more than once. This is the "conservative/safe" way of doing things. If you choose to do not hold the wheel, then disable fuel/ignition and crank the engine over for 30-60 seconds at least. The problem with this is that if you have a freshly built engine, depending on assembly lube and how you primed the system, you could wipe the bearings. Regardless of method you should always have the return line disconnected to verify oil flow.
Also, holding the compressor wheel assumes you have 2 people. I have enough underlings to loan out if needed.

Re: Switched turbo can i start it?
I always store my turbos return side up and keep them full of oil. However there is a fine residue left over when they are new from the balancing process.
Holding the wheel on a new motor, first start ensures that oil reaches the bearing system before the turbo spins, as depending on how the feed line is plumbed/length, it can take a minute for oil to reach the turbo.
Its simply a safe measure

Unless Mac has changed his stance on turbo initial startup, this is what he had me do when I got my turbo from him (and it makes sense). It's the same process I'd done with my previous turbo as well.
Disconnect the turbo drain line. Disable fuel and spark from the motor. Pull the spark plugs if you'd like, so that it'll spin more freely (my added step). Crank the motor until you have a steady stream of oil coming out of the return. Your turbo is now primed with oil.

good idea to disconnect the drain i would just prime the turbo full of oil and start the engine.. so just drain into an oil container check flow then shut it down? how much oil is the norm?
