Default Stock PVC system, and how it may have helped me?

Hey guys gotta question. First off what does a stock PVC system do? I understand that it relieves crankcase pressure, but what about my stock one? There are two black tubes welded together. It was connected to the valve cover breather, and the other side was plugged? Pretty much no venting at all. Well anyways, what im trying to get at is this.. when i blew a ringland (most likely) I noticed that the plug on the end blew off and there was light smoke coming out of it. My friend told me that my PVC system may have saved me? thats what i want to know. HOW?

There were no lines running to my charge pipe, like a NA setup. Do i need a catch can?

Whats the difference between the stock and a catch can system?

Whats the other tube for thats welded to the pipe connected to the valve cover?

I can't help you much because I don't know much about the PCV system but I do know that the pipe you are talking about is for coolant... that's the line I tapped to run coolant lines to my turbo...

Im left with this then. I know of the tube that goes from the valve cover to the charge pipe. Thats all i know and i understand how it pulls air from the valve cover. Is ther anything else on the back of the block that has to do wtih the PCV system? I saw some pics wtih a couple tubes and what not.
