My old 84mm B16A set up with Stock B16A head BUT upgraded springs and retainers made 616whp 28psi. My current set up is a stock sleeved LS/VTEC with stock B16A head again with upgraded valvesprings and retainers has made 620whp 450 ft-lb torque though only ran at the track with about 540whp

If you dont want to upgrade springs and retianers make sure you have the stock revlimiter in it. But vavle springs are cheap insurance..

Any time you are in a boosted application, springs and retainers are a must esp. at your hp level. If you have 25 pds of boost on your motor, you just took off 25 pds. of seat pressure off your valve. Even if a guy gets away with it once or twice, your just asking for issues to at least not run springs and retainers.

Yeah exatly the pressure in the combustion chamber is going to want to act on the valves and try to move them. Valve float can occur much easier even understock rev limit because of the boost.

get the springs and retainers. I've seen bad **** happen before with the valves with high boost even at stock redline.

Stock honda intake valve is what, 33mm? That's about 1.3 inches, and the surface area works out to be about the same in square inches. So at 25 pounds per square inch of boost you're looking at about 33 pounds off of the seat pressure, and at 30 psi you're looking at almost 40 pounds off the seat.

ive heard of people dropping valves.... is it because of a crappy valve job on the head or poor tuning?

Or just over revved, valve doesn't cause a dropped valve usually is due to valvesprings or over revving where the valve taps the piston and knocks teh keepers out , at least from what I know. Others can probably elaborate more on the subject like the almighty Tony1

Depending on how many miles are on this head.It might be a good idea to get new valves along with your springs and retainers.
