Default Are stock oil pumps good or not??

whats the verdict? from what I see in the archives some people say they will hold over 500hp just fine, others say you have to get a prodrive gear. then a few says that the prodrive gear breaks, its better go external? are they good or not?

The oil pump isnt stressed by high horsepower levels, like rods/pistons are. It merely spins with the crank. High rpms would be more detrimental than high hp.

I agree, I have seen a few people shatter them, and I cant really see them being effected by high hp, but like he said, high RPM's would be a different story. In either case, I know they make aftermarket gears for them to keep it from happening, a sound investment if your worried about it.

Try searching drag racing for threads about this. lots of good info.

The real problem that causes oil pumps to blow is engine harmonics. The stock dampner is tuned for the stock pistons/rods. When people build motors with aftermarket pistons/rods they often use a stock dampner that is not tuned for the new harmonics. With enough horsepower the vibration's get high enough to blow the oil pump gear. The band aid fix is to think that the gear is too weak and you need an aftermarket gear. The proper fix is to buy a harmonic dampner like the Fluidampner. This damner is SFI approved and dampens all harmonics of any piston/rod combos. If there are no vibrations the stock oil pump gear should never break. Jotech still runs stock oil pump. 1000hp & 8.38 @ 178mph.

I broke three oil pumps at 19 psi at 9000rpm, turned rpm down to 7900 and try to keep it under 160mph for a long period of time. also installed a prodrive oil pump. just hope I dont crack the housing on the oil pump. good now 350 whp for 8900 mile on a built motor sleeved. no problems.
