Stock LS Rods... Has anyone managed to bend/break them?
I was just wondering if anyone here has had any problems with stock LS rods with boost, and if so, what were the conditions that it happened under (ie how much boost, how much power, how was the car tuned, etc)? I've seen them handle plenty of boost in several motors, but I'd like to get some idea as to what it takes to bend or break them. I've only heard about D-series guys breaking rods left and right, but I can't recall a single case of a B18A/B rod breaking. Thanks

I dont think the question with eagle rods is so much the power, but from my expiernce its RPM's...Eagle rates there rods to 900whp, while i have yet to see them take that HP i am sure they are able to handle well over 600whp, considering i have seen it first hand...
The rods should be able to make high HP, as long as the motor was built to spec using correct tolerances, bearings etc...

That was the problem associated with the OLD 5/8 rod bolt...
I have yet to hear of any problems with the larger 3/8 bolt...

WOW, i must be tired....
Well in that case i wouldnt suggest pushing the motor past 330ish whp... Usually the second weakest thing in that motor is the rods... i would be more worried about the ringlands giving way... just dont look for high RPM's out of LS motors and you should be ok...

For the past 3 years, I've been road racing on stock LS internals, except for ARP head studs, while boosting at 9 psi (in Colorado, so it's equivilent to about 7 psi at sea level). After a little 9000 RPM "oops" earlier this season, I need to pull the head and tranny to fix some stuff, so I figure I might as well swap the block out with a fresh one while I'm at it. I'm pretty impressed with Honda that I haven't managed to blow it up in the past 3 years, but it obviously has some wear, I want to run more boost without having to worry, and I have another B18B block sitting in my garage that I've been meaning to build.
I'm going to use forged pistons, probably Wiseco, so I can run a little more boost and reduce my risk of ring-land failure. I was just curious if stock LS rods would be an issue or not... I hadn't heard of anyone breaking them, and I know people running 15-20 psi on stock LS internals, but they only do it for 12 seconds or less at a time. So, I just wanted to make sure that Honda-Tech didn't know of any common problems with boosting on these rods. I'll be using ARP rod studs. I'm only looking to make around 300 whp and 300 torque, and I don't plan on revving much higher than 7000 RPM on a regular basis.

what ^^ said... It's the rodbolts not the rods that fail. If you replace the rodbolts with ARPs, you'll be fine to at least mid 300s if not higher. One thing to keep in mind - most pistons are designed for a floating pin, which means the stock rods (press fit pin) will need to be machined to accept the different style pin.

just pulled a buddys motor apart today and had a broken rod he always reved the crap out of it so ya and not even boosted just stock

i think its the head on the LS that limits your RPM limit.
with a vtec head ive heard guys going up to 8500..

9500 regularly and 10,000 several times in a B20VTEC, with ARP bolts, and the beams were polished to remove stress risers.
