Default STC Reaper B16 Review

Good evening guys. Just acquired a STC Reaper from Speed Trapp Consulting with help from my friend, Mac "TheShodan". It was time to step up to a real turbo. Wanted a reliable, easy rebuildable, efficient turbo for my goals and driving style. It's my daily driver and track bitch, looking for 550+ on C16. Too bad we dont get E85 down here. Anyways......

I will be installing the turbo this Wednesday and IF I have time, take it to the dyno next week. I just started flying for the airlines and my time is NONE.
Here are some specs of the turbine:

Here's some eye candy.... will keep posting as needed. Enjoy!!!

Finally got some results as promised!!! Ran into some ignition and intercooler problems but fixing that next week and I'll dyno again for more boost. I think my ignition module crapped out and I have a Precision 600 FMIC which got hot as a frying pan after 26 psi. Had to stop after that.

375@15psi
428@19psi
451@22psi
503@26psi

The turbine is definitely all that!!! Efficient!! Car was coming full boost at 6000 and hitting the limiter at 9300 rpms. Curve looks skywards so looking to increase to maybe 9800.

Was gonna push it to 33-35psi but...........

Any opinions/suggestions fire away.

I made almost the exact same numbers at 15 and 20 psi

It would be nice if you listed your entire setup to compare numbers with us other users.

Definitely looks like ignition timing issues (like you stated) and since there's a lot of fuel, there's a bit less power seen at the same boost pressures. I'd also upgrade intercoolers (I suggest a Garrett core in the 750hp range). I've had guys at 560whp at 22psi with that turbo so far, so I can't wait for you to get back to the dyno after fixing those issues. As always, thanks for the support

My setup is:

Darton sleeved 85mm B16 stock crank
B16 virgin head (no PnP)
S2 complete valvetrain
S2 Pro IM
S2 Pro1 Cams + Tuner cam gears
ID1000cc on AEM fuel rail on Stock lines
Aeromotive 1:1 reg.
Walbro 255 high flow intank
CP 9.8:1 Pistons (compression 180psi across the board before the cams installed)
Eagle rods
Custom Equal lenght manifold
STC Reaper 71mm exhaust wheel .63ar
3in downpipe all the way back to a 4in cutout

Timing issues all the way and the mix was still at 10.8-11.0 Next time around hope to see it 11.4 to keep it safe. We still gonna keep it on the safe side and not squeeze the max out of it since its a daily driver and want to keep some comfort zone. Temperatures here are not the best either.

Hope to get the intercooler this week, new ignition module and give it another shot. The car would top at 34-35 psi so expecting to see close to 600 if the turbo gods let me. We did 503 at 26psi and when we made a run at 31 psi we would get 460whp LOL. We touched the intercooler and it was so hot u could fry an egg. My tuner got a water bubble on his finger because of it so its definitely that that's killing my performance.

Remember, On the other side, bigger is fine, but its best if you can get a BETTER intercooler that can exchange heat more efficiently. the 600hp won't be enough, and those were spearco cores IIRC. which are very good.

Why did you opt for a 71mm exhaust wheel vs the 84mm? If I remember correctly, 84mm is the regular exhaust wheel size right?

Trying to figure out why my setup made 15 more hp on 1psi less then you on a much smaller turbo on 14psi

pretty much same motor setup as you but stock sleeve's and a victor x and i have a 5557e billet

Is it because your turbo isn't in its efficiency range yet? or were you having ignition issues the whole time and not just on your higher boost levels?

The efficiency range of this turbo should be between 18-31psi.

Numbers are just numbers at the end the day, a dyno is just a tuning tool.

15whp is neglibable when you factor in altitude, dyno type, calibration, rotational mass etc.

I wouldnt look too far into it honestly.

71mm is the regular but there's an option for a 74mm inducer I believe at no additional price. I didn't opt for the 74mm since I daily drive it and looking for "responsiveness" or a balance of. I will not push it any further than around 550whp since this is my final goal. I believe the 74mm wheel raises the efficiency at higher boost levels. Mac can chime in on that.

I was having ignition problems all night but the efficiency of the turbo is from around 18psi to 33psi. I was looking at great gains after 19 psi even with my problems. So im happy somewhat, that when all the crap sorted out I will definitely see great numbers.

Good going, nice setup too..

Can we see the dyno graph scaled by RPM?

84mm is exducer of the compressor wheel not the exhaust. AlexD, you also have the 71mm.

Forgot to mention my last turbine setup for this car which was the reason for this review. The battle between ebay turbos and a real turbo. Last setup I had an ebay gt35 .63ar with antisurge. It made the exact same numbers but at 32psi. The Reaper did it on 26psi with problems so im definitely happy till now.

Update:
My new 31x12x4 intercooler is on its way, ignition is fixed.

Found another problem with the #4 injector plug. One of the terminals does not plug in correctly all the way due to a little soldering material that found its way forward a bit so it doesnt enter the pin. Fixing right now.

I cant do closed cutout pulls since I put the factory exhaust on the back but tried on the street and the car wont make not even 1/2 psi LOL. I have a BADLANDZ 3 3/4 electric.

Worked out all my problems and new intercooler is home so back to the dyno soon.
Here's a quick vid of the 26psi pull.
