it's not 100% necessary, but the return line on a lot of turbo kits/setups out there run really close to the downpipe, and the heat from the downpipe tends to melt the rubber hose.

after running 3weeks with the rubber return line it developed a crack. Play it safe with the braided lines.

you take the chance of the rubber line exploding due to the heat that is around like the downpipe, so spend a little extra money and be safe.
