Stainless MIG welding hints?
I'll be welding my 304L stainless intercooler piping as soon as my turbo manifold arrives. I only have experience welding on mild steel. Is the technique for welding stainless any different?
Thanks
Ben

no, stainless welds verry easily... I use 100% argon vs. 75/25 that most people use for mild, but that is the only differance
oh, and of course you will want to use stainless wire

how terrible would it be to weld ss to mild with fluxcore? i dont have a tank yet, but people have asked me if i could and i said no. looks/grinding is no issue.

GAAAAHHH!!! Very ugly and not a good joint!
1. Fluxcore is already sloppy.
2. Different materials don't weld easily.
3. different temp expansion coefficients means cracks, lots of them.
Randy
100% argon works fine for any SS or mild steel application. it really is the best sheild gas for that but the 75/25 stuff is WAAAY cheaper.

I thought that helium based tri-mix was supposed to be used for Stainless MIG welding?
thats what hobart recomends...... http://www.hobartwelders.com/techtips.html#mig

100% argon works fine on steel its just that the mix has carbon in it to add carbon back into the steel because some is burnt off during welding.

I have not had any problems (yet). Besides, it is just ic piping right? I would prob do it if I didn't have a gas mig (which I don't) but if you do, and getting gas isn't expensive (I have no idea) get the gas.
If you do it with flux core and the wire is mild, I would spray something on there to prevent rust. The worst that will happen, I guess, is that you will have to put a new bead on it later.

to weld a cage I wouldn't use anything other then tig. there's no way you could get the mig tip in all the cracks and shield the puddle properly, plus mig welds (depending on what filler/gas you use) have been known to be weaker then tig welds, plus tig looks so nice when you do them correctly.

Re: Stainless MIG welding hints? (Canuk_SiR)
for nhra a cage mild steel HAS to be MIG'ed and chrome moly TIG'd
definitley get a 230V welder for that stuff. I did mine with my 110 cause i have no 220 in the garage and it looks SO shitty. quite ugly. gonna have to tint the windows so nobody can see it
check out harbor frieght i got thier 230 and for teh price it works great. and lok at
kenkustomchassis.com for the cage. i got an 8pt rollbar for $160!!!

by capitlizing that HAS I hope you don't mean you can't TIG mild steel. Gen Reg of the NHRA rule book Rule 4:10:

GAAAAHHH!!! Very ugly and not a good joint!
1. Fluxcore is already sloppy.
2. Different materials don't weld easily.
3. different temp expansion coefficients means cracks, lots of them.

100% argon works fine for any SS or mild steel application. it really is the best sheild gas for that but the 75/25 stuff is WAAAY cheaper.</TD></TR></TABLE>
but 2. and 3. would apply to welding with gas as well. more specifically, how much worse is welding ss to mild with fluxcore (mild, they dont make ss fluxcore?) vs with gas and the correct ss wire? no critical joints, just an ss muffler to mild b pipe.
