Default Sorry...but I'm a complete turbo n00b...

Here are my embarrasing n00b turbo questions....

1.) what is the difference between the wastegate and the turbo itself?

2.) 5 PSI is = to 5 pounds of boost per square inch correct?

3.) when using boost, is it best to have boost engaged during first gear...or wait till 2nd gear to start using the boost? It seems like you would get out of first gear way too soon to really be able to use any boost. Obviously you would have to have a boost control to do this...but ne wayz....

that concludes my embarrasing questions...plz dont laugh too hard

1.) The wastegate is what controlls the amount of exhaust gases getting to your turbo. It vents out excess exhuast so you don't overboost your motor. There are boost controllers that you hook up to your wastegate to control the amount of boost you want to make. There are "internal" wastegates that are built into the turbo and "external" wastegates that install usually onto the turbo manifold itself such as a Tial, Deltagate(bad), and Hks..etc

2.)5psi = 5 pounds of pressure. PSI = pounds per square inch. There is also "Bar" 1 Bar = 14.7 lbs of boost.

3.) it doesn't matter . you can't really call upon boost like "NAWZ"....it depends on your motor setup and the size of your turbo. Your turbo spools up and is dependant on exhaust gases coming out of your motor. I guess if you didn't want boost in first gear you can get a get a boost controller to help you out with this....but I don't really see the point.

You are thinking that turbo works like nos, and it doesn't turbo is always working, off course, like stated above you can make that, but there is no point

If you watch "The fast and the furious" or "2fast 2furious" disregard anything they say about cars or tuning.

You'll be a much wiser person for doing this. HEED MY WORDS YOUNG GRASSHOPPER!

I've got a Q.
So why is 10psi on a T25 different from 10psi on a straight T04?

isn't 1psi = 1psi?

pressure is different from volume.

Bad example, but you'll get the idea:
You can inflate a bike tire to 60 psi, or a semi truck tire to 60psi. Same pressure, MUCH more volume.

yeah, I guess that's true.
So psi isn't really a good way to measure boost pressure?

i dont see how else you would measure pressure if using a pressure measurement wasnt good enough

>>So why is 10psi on a T25 different from 10psi on a straight T04?
isn't 1psi = 1psi?<<

All turbos have graphical representations of their efficiency ranges. the up/down axis is boost pressure, and the left/right axis is the volume of air. The graphs end up resembling a target sort of, with the "sweet spot" (most efficient zone) of the turbo being represented by the "bullseye". A T25 has a different efficiency range from a T04. It's a smaller turbo, so it's efficient at a lower "volume" of air, measured in cubic feet per minute our lbs per minute.

In a way, you're right. 1psi is 1psi. What happens essentially is that the smaller T25 is not as efficient at moving large amounts of air as a T04, so while boost pressure is the same at some hypothetical point, the *charge temperature* from the T25 will be a lot higher. The temperature difference is really the primary reason why a T25 at 15 psi makes less HP than a T04 at 15 psi.

That said, I've got a T25 on my D16Y8 and it's fantastic.
