Some B18b carnage pics - What gave out?
First off a little background on the setup:
-'95 Eg with stock b18b (aprox. 75k miles on engine)
-PT 50 T3/T4 Turbo, SFP manifold, Spearco FMIC, 450cc injectors with uberdata. Running 10psi on a fairly conservative map.
The engine blew on the highway doing 70ish. Just cruising without even going near boost. About 2-3 weeks before the engine blew, I did a comp test on it and it yeilded 140psi across all 4 cylinders , so we kinda knew something wasnt right. The engine was boosted for aprox 2 years and it was defintly not babied.. Dynoed @ 260whp and 228tq
Pics:
Hole in block
Pieces of rods and bearing found in the oil pan
More pieces of rods
Piston and piece of rod
*not pictured is the crankshaft, which was severly charred? Right where the big end of the rod meets the crank shaft is completly black. Bottom of sleeve is cracked and also the piston hit the head and chipped 2 of the valves.
It's obvious that the rod gave out, but was it due to something else? The rod bearing (at least that what i think it was) is completly flattened and paper thin.
More pics of the engine swap and **** on my website. http://www.slammdsol.com --> Photos --> Kyles LS swap

possibly a rod bolt failed. its hard to say what gave out first.
either way congratulations on your new founf boat anchor

if the big end of the rod and crank journal that it was spinning on was "charred" like you say it sounds like it starved for oil. burnt up the bearing and seized the rod which then snapped it since you were traveling at that speed on the highway.
time for a newer stronger engine

i would say if crank is charred a rod bearing would have failed from lack of oil and then the rest was down hill from there

i would say this looks like the culprit.
new sleeved block w/ forged internals

good numbers on stock motor......
just get a built bottom end and run 20psi
u should be able to make 330whp
get 650cc injectors and more tunning be around 350 or so

Re: (Pooptooth)
planing on going the same route as you with a similar set-up, i hope mine will last that long so is that oil pump failure then, or low oil, or clogged passages?

Re: (ProjectDarkBlack)
The engine had about 1.5 quarts of oil in the pan when we removed it.. The other 2.5~ were prolly lost when it blew a hole in the block cuz there was oil all over the engine bay and a nice puddle in the driveway from where the car sat for 2 months. I dont think it failed due to oil starvation.

It could have failed for oil starvation while being completely full of oil. All it takes is metal particulates clogging one of the bearing oil feed orifices....

Re: (redzcstandardhatch)
My condolences. It's better to burn out than to slowly fade away...
That way you know what happened and have a reason to get new stuff!
Buy a high-milage LS, rebuild it, then repeat above

How could you clean something like that out? As preventative maintenance.

That's what I ahve. Magnetic drain plug. But really. If there are ANY shavings, and you haven't done any engine internal work etc, then something's wrong.
