Default Sohc Turbo transmission? Recomendations........

I am in the process of boosting a 95 dx motor, it will have a basic greddy kit installed. The dx tranny feels decent but I also have a ex tranny I was thinkin about throwin on when I do a clutch upgrade. What do you single cam guys think about swapping to a ex tranny? Too quick or do it since I am only going to be running 5.5 on this setup.

5.5 psi? Do it. Although my buddy had an EX tranny put on his 00' DX and it didn't feel like shorter gears, but he could of just gotten screwed. But if you have an EX tranny already might as well try it out.

Yeah thats what I figured. How big a diff. is there in the dx and ex tranny. I have done searches and no one really talks about the difference in them......just lots of talk about how sorry the cx and vx are.

There's a pretty big difference in ex/dx trannys. I had my stock EX tranny then my friend broke it and i went to a 5th gen SI tranny which is essentially the same as an EX tranny. Another friend broke that one so i'm now on a HX tranny which is the same gearing as the DX and it's WAYYYYYY longer. EX goes like 1st to 30, 2nd to 60, 3rd to 90, 4th to 120. The HX is like 1st to 40, 2nd to 72, 3rd to 110, 4th to who knows.

Basically it takes a whole shift out of your 1/4 mile the gearing is so much taller but i'm getting like 30 mpg with the longer geared tranny. I can't really decide which i like more.

wow there are some pretty big differences in the tranny's

i had a DX tranny for a long time, just swapped an ex in about a month ago its way shorter feeling that the DX

that has been said before is even though the EX tranny is the close ratio of the SOHC, some say its still way longer in gears than an LS tranny

so for as boost goes, im goin with the EX tranny, but some say go with the DX....

heres some info from Mista Bones tranny page

EX/Si
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.900
3rd-----1.250
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.750 for Si HB and Del sol Si
or------0.702 for 2 dr or 4 dr sedan
Final Drive---4.250

DX/LX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.762
3rd-----1.172
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---4.058

CX /VX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.761
3rd-----1.066
4th-----0.853
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---3.250

from the DX to EX tranny
1st is the same
2nd is shorter in the EX
3rd is a tad shorter in the EX
4th and 5th same

but the main thing is Final Drive

a 4.058 DX to a 4.250EX is a pretty big difference...

So it should be REALLY noticable with an EX tranny? My friend and I have always wondered if he actually has an EX tranny...wondering if there's a way to find out.

there is a code painted on the top of the tranny that will tell you but its easily washed off with solvent

alos i think there is a code on the case somewhere serial number or something near the filler plug something like p20XXXXXXX or s20XXXXXXX

and YES it should be noticable....

EX tranny will make a big difference. I am putting one in my y7 next weekend when I do my clutch.

An easy way to tell...1st gear winds out at almost 30mph in a dx tranny and closer to 20 in a EX tranny. EX trannys are much shorter than a dx tranny.

The D16Y8 tranny is an S40, just like all other 96+ trannies, but also look for K4F on the serial #.

Damn I think he got fucked then. We'll throw the stockies on the front and see when 1st tops out.

so if it's a EX tranny it will have K4F in the serial number?

I just looked at the one I have in the garage and it has K4F printed right on it.

Nah that's not true, when i still had my original tranny in my 00 ex 1st would go to about 32 instead of 42 in the current DX

Beause of the final drive difference the gears are a lot taller, i'm thinkin the dx tranny will make a good highway race setup with boost but off the line it might suck. When i get my SC50 on this week i'm gonna take it back to the 1/8 to see if i can pull another mid 8.

in a race situation dx and ex feel the same in first and second. not enuff difference for you to feel. but third is where it made the most difference for me. dx third was sooo long, it would be where i lost if i was meant to lose. ex third is shorter and pulls harder. ex over dx any day (except for fuel economy maybe) and 96-00 over 92-95 if u have a choice

Here's some more info from MistaBones page:

These tables will tell you how much your rpm's will drop when shifting. These numbers are for a steady speed shift. If you are accelerating they will be slightly higher due to clutch slippage and continued acceleration. Hybrid trannys also included. MPH numbers are for stock size tires, 22.7" overall diameter. MPH numbers for 5th gear are assuming enough power to overcome wind drag.
How to use these tables...If you shift at 6800 rpm using the DX tranny as an example, your rpm will fall to 3685 in 2nd, 4526 in 3rd, on so on.

DX
1st----3.250---0000/6800---34.8mph
2nd---1.761---3685/6800---64.3mph
3rd----1.172---4526/6800---96.9mph
4th----0.909---5274/6800---124.5mph
5th----0.702---5251/6800---161.3mph

Si/EX
1st----3.250---0000/7200---35.2mph
2nd---1.900---4209/7200---60.2mph
3rd----1.250---4739/7200---91.6mph
4th----0.909---5236/7200---125.9mph
Choose your 5th
5th----0.702---5560/7200---163.0mph
5th----0.750---5941/7200---152.6mph
5th----0.771---6107/7200---148.4mph

Hybrid using ZC 3rd and 4th gears
1st----3.250---0000/7200---35.2mph
2nd---1.900---4209/7200---60.2mph
3rd----1.346---5101/7200---85.0mph
4th----1.033---5526/7200---110.7mph
5th----0.750---5228/7200---152.5mph

For 92-95 trannys it is best to use the HF/STD 3rd gear of 1.033 for 4th gear.
If you use the ZC 4th gear it will require grinding to fit the synchro hub.

Open your eyes friend. You didn't post the estimated speeds for the shift points. I was just trying to clarify and address the other responses. So sit down.
