Sohc tranny's suck but best out the box is the s40 from a EX/SI. It has shorter gears then its s20 brother, steel shift forks and larger bearings. What r ur power goals? If you only trying to make 200-300 wheel then the s40 should hold up ok but I would recommend getting a LSD..

SOHC transmissions can be very reliable, even with big power. I would highly suggest a full refresh on bearings and seals, and make sure your synchros are satisfactory. Both trannies have are identical (gear-wise) look it up.
An LSD is definitely recommended, I agree.
As for the OP, what are you going to do with your car? Road race? Bonneville? That's a VERY vague question.

Reading > You I said EX/SI. THere r 2 differant s20 trannies one for the EX/Si and other for the LX/DX. The one from the 92-95 EX/SI (s20) has the same gearing has the 96-00 s40.. Last time I check they didnt make a d series SI in 96-00 that why i wrote EX SI

Re: (d_EG COUPE)
You want any 92-95 ex or si tranny... The 96-00 ex's had steel shift forks that are paper thin and only have a very small contact point at the weld.. I can bend the forks by hand.. I went through 3-4 of the 96-00 trannies.. People kept saying they were better.. Then I took apart a 92-95 tranny with the aluminum forks and those things are beefy.. THey have a huge amount of webbing that the 96+ trannies do not have..
So I repeat 92-95 ex or si tranny will do you right... SYnchro wise the D-series trannies take a beating.. THey are only single cone synchros and do not do well at high rpm's..

You made the statement S40 in EX/Si. Your '92-'95 Si's didn't come with S40's. They have an S20 label and the stamp on the case near the axle hole says B000, as opposed to the S20 in the LX/DX that has A000. The S20 (B version) and the S40 (out of '96-'00 EX's) have identical gear ratios. That's what I was saying. It's all good, chief, I see what you are getting at, but the OP pretty much stated that he doesn't know about D-series trannies, and I was trying to clear that up.
