SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
I have a 93 del sol si and im stuck with the d series and ive seen alot of good numbers come from SOHC turbo builds but my boy says just drop a type r or gsr in it and be done with it. Can anyone tell me if boosting the SOHC is a good idea.
Thank you

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
Absolutely not. I was stupid to boost my D-series just to get a measly 200 horsepower out of a stock block while retaining an average of 30MPG. I was stupid not to spend money to swap in a bigger engine when I had a D-series sitting right there in front of me.
Stop being a punk and listening to your boy and make up your own mind. If you're "stuck" with a D then boost it.

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
Iv tuned alot of turbo d and b series cars and Ill give you my honest opinion of both.
turbo d series: great gas mileage, just tuned a turbo y7 that pulls 39/42 mpg lol. they lack out of boost power, potential on stock internals. they are great if your just looking for a bit more power but you will need to build it to make it fast (yes I know some sohcs make 240whp and last...etc) but most of the sohc turbos Iv tuned haven't been much of a adrenaline rush.
turbo b series: if you wanna go this route I choose to stay with non vtec motors cause they have the same potential on a stock block and have great power bands when turbo'd. you can make 300whp reliably out of a turbo ls or b20, the motors are plentiful and they have much stronger trannys as well. 300whp will get you in the 11's in a eg hatch.
only you can decide.

^^
Hes comparing a boosted D to a NA swap.
personally, the $$ spent on a type r engine, swap, (axles,ECU,trans, mounts, etc..) can be used to rebuild your D series and boost it.
I would choose the built boosted D over a N/A OEM Bseries. Synchrotech has parts to rebuild the trans also.

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
Everyone is right. Just make up your mind and stick with it. I had d series that I was getting ready to turbo. I bought most everything for it, ready to boost. Then, I decided I wanted an NA B series and ended up with a GSR swap, so that good money I spent on D series turbo is wasted.
Now, I'm working on boosting the GSR lol. So more money and more time being invested. Oh well, gotta love it.

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
I had a y8 (stock) in a cx hatch for a few years, then i bought a ''new'' b16a (stock)...the b16a was way more fun...iv since boosted it to 7psi and it is super fun. The cost was not very much $2000-motor, $1500ish-pieced together turbo kit with tune, not a show stopper or a race proven setup but it has been running good for some time now. I also dont beat on the car or redline it. And i know the op isnt talking about boosting a b series but i can only talk from experience....i say swap it to a B series imo

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
my first set-up was a d15b7 non-vtec sohc with a sub $1000 turbo set-up. that includes, full turbo kit, tuning, exhaust and clutch....it can be done.
gt17 turbo - 50
mani - 50
310cc injectors got on a barter = free
charge pipe + bov = 125
downpipe = 80
chip kit w/ basemap = 35
clutch = 150
exhaust = 125
street tune = 20
oil lines = 75
fmic = 50
misc hoses, fittings, clamps, fluids, et = 150
ran a best of 13.9 @ 82mph fouling the spark plugs between the 1/8th and 1000ft marker....trapped consistant 102-104
i walked circles around bolt on b-series guys
good luck finding a decent b-swap complete with EVERYTHING that will trap over a hundred for under a $1000

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
at least around where I live you can sell a d16z6 swap for like 600 bucks and pick up a full ls swap for around 800. if it came down to that Id def pick the b series over D but if where your at a ls swap costs alot then a turbo D isn't a bad option. you can't really compare a turbo sohc to a stock itr swap since the itr swap will cost what it would to make a 300whp turbo d lol.

Re: SOHC Boost or Swap for B Series
honda/acura's, and have seen Way more d series with ebay turbos blow up than the N/A motors I have built, just giving my 2 cents and an option is all. Go D and turbo it dont matter long as your happy with the end results.
