So what does 18 lbs of boost do to stock pistons?
Well I have been boosted for about 6 weeks now. I was screwing around one Friday night 3 weeks ago with the boost controller and this is what I did. The datalogs show ~17.8 lbs of boost. Oops.
Damn it was fast too It was the excuse I had been looking for though. All rebuilt now with CP 9.8:1s and Manley rods with ACL bearings and OEM gaskets and seals, she runs like a champ now! I just thought you guys might enjoy this

I also forgot to mention these pistons are 154k miles old. They have 30-40 dragstrip passes, over 100 auto-x events and about 60 track weekend events on them, not to mention a brief encounter with a 100 shot direct port, so yeah, they stood up pretty well IMO. I got lucky with the cylinder walls, a fresh hone and I was good to go.

Actually the tune is perfect(I happen to tune Gran-Am Cup cars for a living). Running Crome Pro with RC 750s and a VERY conservative igniton timing. I would imagine if the pistons had been younger they would have held up better, but eh, it is on a small-ish turbo and 18 PSI is out of its efficiency range. Hot hot intake charge

a friend of mine ran 19 psi on his stock block 00 si b16a, never blew, u knew these cars get stolen faster in northern va then u can blow em up. btw inline pro tuned it, it was like 350 whp, or 380 or something like that, he normally ran 15 psi, 19 for track i think they gave him the no guaruntees talk about it before they did it

Not a single detonation event datalogged on the knock sensor either, just old beat down pistons and lots of hot boost It ran 1 bar no problem for a few weeks, made some good pulls on the dyno and a bunch of 4th and 5th pulls, it would have held 1bar forever IMHO but this was just too much.

When I rebuilt my B18B I was pulling the rings off (pistons looked good) and a ring land fell off my #3 piston... but my motor was 12psi on a FMU for a year with some nitrous on that too so i thought it was funny that that was the only damage... my buddy melted a hole through one of his LS pistons

Seems like I remember NFN running a GSR block with ITR pistons...... but I could be wrong, or he may have changed that when he went FI ......

wow, those pistons went through a lot before the 18 psi run...i say they lasted pretty long

GSR stock pistons, lots of miles. Compression was 230-110-110-230, the # 2 and 3 had a chunk that fell out as soon as I pulled the pistons a few weeks ago, I just pulled all the rest of the rings off earlier to inspect them better and they all fell out. It had a milled head by .020 so the compression was a *bit* higher than stock.
BTW this was with a Greddy TD05-18G turbo, custom built 2.5 inch downpipe from the turbo/wastegate exit down a mandrel bent 2.5 inch exhaust and ported/enlarged wastegate hole and flapper, JRC 8 inch intercooler, 750cc injectors, P30 ECU running CromePro engine management, AL home built charge pipes in a GSR motor with Skunk2 Stage 1 cams (yes they have been dyno tuned) and a Portflow competition ported head. She is back and running strong now.

Eh yeah, I was expecing to rebuild it within a few thousand miles anyways, so I had some cash in reserve for this situation. I am sure I will go nuts and have to get sleeves next, but not for a little while anyways.

As far as a direct comparison to other cams, I don't have any hard data, as these cams have been in my car the entire time it has been turboed. Hoewver they did require a good deal more fuel under boost than similarly sized turbo/engine combos I have tuned, so fromt that one could deduce they are flowing more pounds of air. The torque curve is over 250 ft/lbs from ~3000 to 8250 when it starts to drop off, but it peaks at 266 at 7800 or so. At any rate, the car is disgustilgly fast and makes full boost instantly at anything over 3k RPMs, and I am running an 00 Si tranny w/Quaife so I am always over 3k anyways. It is an absolute blast, although I can already feel a need for a larger snail

thanks for the reply, sounds like they are working very nicely. torque is a good thing to have. how soon do you plan to upgrade your turbo, and get the car re-tuned?would it be possible for you to do a "cam comparison"?(that is, if you have the time and money to do it, as well as the cams to compare) im interested in seeing results with a larger turbo. do you think they(the cams) might have too much overlap @ high rpms? or will you be able to compansate by adjusting the cam gears accordingly?

looks like the muffler bearings done blowed up Those will make cool paper weights (I would right "Honda-tech talked me into it!!!")
