So... my crank pulley flew off while driving... wtf?
it's totaly gone, adios. couldn't even find it...
took off, boosted.... the loud clunk noise, battery light comes on... i pull over asap... check... the crankshaft pulley disapeared! the belt was still there though, hanging on the alternator...
went back to look for it, after an hour of searching no luck...
seriously though... what could have caused this? just lazy block assembly ?
could this have caused any serious damage?
could I have damaged it by driving home? well I drove for like 15 seconds, then was able to roll 90% of the way back.
installation should be a breeze right?, just get a new pulley & bolt...?
TIA
Note: I didn't assemble my own block. I didn't trust myself, and figured professionals would do it much better, and allow me to sleep safer at night. But I think I forgot that even "professionals" get lazy sometimes.

Yea, same **** happened to me too! Driving along fine, then the batt light came on. WTF? Pulled over, popped the hood. Crap, the crank pulley backed out and the belts were gone. Scratch my head, and hurry back home. I don't believe there is any damage to the motor or whatnot, it's just running off the battery, so hurry back home before you lose power. But I tell ya, the car did feel a bit zippier! I guess no load on the crank = quicker acceleration?
Anyways, I heard that there's suppose to be a "key" that goes somewhere in the pulley when you bolt it back on. I haven't checked, cuz when I got home, I just used an impact and zipped the bolt back in. Hasn't come off in the last 3 weeks, so I hopefully this is the last time.

That sucks!! Should be simple ......bolt one back on and go.

A dingo ate your crank pully?!!!!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I would be seriously worried about whoever built your engine if the didn't torque THAT down properly. I'm assuming that the bolt was missing as well. Its possible that it could have cracked clean through and fallen off that way but more likely it just slipped off the end of the crank. Check for any obvious damage of course but I doubt it screwed anything up.

All I can say is that I hope it didn't damage your motor like it did mine. My crank pulley started to rattle one day, and about a minbute later it flew off as I was pulling into my driveway. The key sheered off part of the keyway on the crank, and the bolt stripped all the threads on the way out of the crank.
I just got my car running again last friday after it was down for 2 months. Here's a picture:

jeez, that's crazy. i brought my car to a nearby shop to use their impact to get the damn pulley bolt loose and then i hand tightened it with a ratchet and drove home scared it would fly off but it didn't even come loose. u gonna ask the shop to reimburse you for parts?
