Default So I dyno'd the GSR on race gas this weekend..........

The result?

401whp @ 18psi, and one dead motor

It was only the second pass I took, car ran fine up through 8500rpm, just about the same moment I let off I hear this odd *POP-POP* and the car stumbles badly ( ). I shut the key off thinking to myself "not good.. not good at all". I tried turning the key again and the car turns over super slowly (kinda like when you reomve the spark plugs for a comp. test)

Push it off the dyno, pop out the first 3 plugs and they all look good, first sign of the obvious is that #4 spark plug feels like it's welded to the head. I had to REALLY lean into the wrench to rip out the plug. And when I finally do... ewwww. THe spark plug looks like a shark bit off the lower half of the plug, took off the VC and finally see the culprit, bastard valve spring retainer on one of the #4 intake valves broke in half and dropped the valve at 8500.

I haven't even opend up the motor yet (kinda still in shock), but bottom line is, the head is trash, 97% chance the block is done as well, 1 JE is destroyed and I'm just hoping to salvage the rest.

I need a

I'll have pics up tonight.

i had the proviledge of seeing the motor yesterday....head was still on.....but in the spark plug hole you can see the head of the valve ...vertically.......ouch...i can wait to see the head..hopefully something is still unharmed...doubt it though

hopefully this didnt happen: ( this is after it was all aleaned up )

Not trying to scare you, but this is a S2 that dropped two valves. (well, snapped two valves). There was metal shavings obviously in the cylinders where they broke, but also back up in the intake manifold, throttle body, and intake. The metal shavings got in all the other cylinders and screwed up all those walls as well. I doubt the shavings would flow back up it you were under boost, but if the cylinder was on compression stroke, and your valve wasnt sealing anymore, maybe. Just make sure to get all that **** out of there, it gets everywhere.
Hopefully your turbo is okay as well.

Yea my biggest concern is the turbo, hope that missing half of the spark plug didn't disinigrate and chew up the turbine I guess I'll tally the damage tonight. Either way I'm sure this block is done, at the very least the walls in #4 would be scratched and this is a stock sleeve block already bored 20-over and I can't afford $700++ to sleeve right now, so i'm limited in options.

I found somebody locally who gave up on an LS-VTEC setup who'd sell me eveything he's got, which basically amounts to a stock LS bottom end and complete PR3 head, for $700. I figure I could just run a stock LSV setup ~300whp and be happy with that..

--or--

Gut the LS and swap over my GSR internals and I'll basically have a GSR again minus the oil squirters (assuming I can use my GSR girdle?) The idea of 8500rpm with no squirters is kinda ehhh...

--or--

Just run a straight LS setup, stock or w/ pistons and rods, make somewhere between 3-400whp but with alot more boost obviously...

--or--

Scavange around for a B18C block and do the obvious rebuild.

Ahhh decisions....

Actually I revved to 8500 exactly as indicated on the dyno sheet, I mean I've heard of/seen others go a littlr higher on stock springs/retainers with no problem so I never thought I'd have to worry about that. I think I even posted up last week about buying a set of springs and retainers to rev it to 9k since the car was still making lots of power up there, but I guess I won't be there anytime soon. Now it's all about 'what to do?'
