Default So I blew up the turbo B18C5...ouch!

This actually happened about a month ago, but I was so frustrated with the car that I didn't touch her until today when I pulled off the head. Reason she blew up was probably me boosting on my old GSR street tune at a whopping 4 lbs.

Oops...that looks expensive.

Let's take a closer look...Cylinder #1 decided to stretch herself out

Hairline crack on Cylinder #3

Here's the ITR head...looks alright, I'm going to freshen her up with a stock rebuild and a little port-n-polish action.

Cylinder #1

Cylinder #2

Cylinder #3

Cylinder #4

So much for a stock-sleeve ITR build next year...

Hopefully if I get the funds together this winter, I can send the block off to Benson for some proper love.

In the meantime, I'll be putting together a budget stock-sleeve LS/VTEC build for next season. I'm hoping to max out my GT3255E on it, then throw on a SC6152E when the ITR block gets back from Benson

Moral of the story: Don't get stupid and not listen to your tuner when they tell you not to boost on an old/different tune

Yeah, I was about to say 4psi didnt do that...but detonation would have. A loose injector clip would have caused some serious leaning out and supplying enough heat for some detonation...your lucky your piston didnt turn into chewing gum

That damage doesn't look like injector failure. Injector failure generally leads to melted parts. You just have fucked sleeves. You were probably too lean and/or too advanced in timing.

detonation is caused by excessive heat from leaning out or advancing timing. i.e injector cuts out or timing advances to much. Detonation can create pressures in excess of 1000psi easily which will crack sleeves like peanut shells. Leaning out is what melts the pistons detonation is what cracks sleeves and puts holes in pistons...both of these problems are from lean conditions and timing. So if his injector clip was lose enough to cause it to cut out in WOT then Im pretty sure he had a realy big leaning out problem enough to cause some serious detonation.

as far as turbo charging a stock ITR...I had a stock JDM ITR boosted on 9 psi making 280hp, It was low on compression on cyclinder #3 and It still lasted as a daily driver 7 days a week and racing every (and I mean every) weekend at the track for two years before the ring land cracked on #3. Its all about timing and the fuel curve...if your tuner knows what he's doing then he can make you a/f ratio look like a stock subie or evo easily. I would still be driving that setup if I would have felt like replacing #3's rings. my plan was to drive it til the rings went the sleeve it and rebuild it...which is what Im finishing now.

I'm well aware of all of that. Injectors cutting out generally lead to melted parts. No melting leads me to believe it wasn't injector failure.

I was running on my old GSR street tune, Crome Pro.

Guys, I know it was my own fault for not waiting to get a wideband on the car once I got her running. Stupid me, but it's a great excuse to get my build started!

If an injector clip was loose your cylinder wouldn't be getting that hot in the first place.
