smoking turbo, oil restrictor?
Hi,
I have a 15g greddy kit on a d16y7. Freshly installed turbo has 300 miles on it and is minty.
The car is smoking moderately from the exhaust.
I have checked my drain line into a waterbottle and it still smokes a tiny bit with drain line disconnected.
I am using the stock greddy 6an feed line... should I get a restrictor... The kit ran fine on another car without a restrictor.
What is up? What are my options as far as restrictors go?
Don't say pooched seals, because I don't believe that is the problem

you can even run a -3 with a restrictor. i did that a few years ago and it drastically cut the smoking down and got me another like 10k miles out of the turbo

Re: smoking turbo, oil restrictor?
I have since installed a .065" restrictor... the car has stopped smoking... I will take another vid tmo in the daylight. Do you guys think with the added restrictor my turbo could be starved of oil?
And to TheShodan, How could a tune resolve the issue of my turbo getting too much oil? Just a question, I know very little about tuning.

you should be fine now.
what other car was it on. my initial thought is the turbo was on another make/model and then you put it on your honda and hondas run high oil pressure which is why you need the restrictor.

I know that this form is kinda old, but i'm having the same problem and jus happened to come across this form by looking up Oil Restrictor threw Google.
I jus helped my friend turbo his 95 civic, With a D16z6 in it i don't know what kit he got i think its jus a cheap ebay one.The Setup is a ram horn turbo mani T3/T4 turbo 2 1/2 down pipe etc... Tuned for 8psi on phearable he has stock motor, but oil coming out of the exhaust and its smoking bad only when you drive it though with it not even boosting? Would i need a smaller oil line? Don't know which one he gots now ? what size oil restrictor should i put on?

If it's an ebay turbo, chances are you just need a new turbo. If GOD himself put one of those turbos on his car w/o the *perfect* oil supply/drain setup, it would smoke too.
It could also be his motor, since most blind basemaps, even one like a phearable chip, usually still suck. Cracked ringlands will put out light-blue to white smoke, and a blown HG will put out mostly white smoke.

Re: smoking turbo, oil restrictor?
My SC61 has started to smoke a bit like that when the car is fully warmed up and then idles for a few minutes. I'm planning to switch out my -4 feed for a -3 and see what happens. Also I have at least a couple thousand miles on my 15w40 Rotella T oil, so I'm thinking that probably needs changing. . .
I'd hate to think that my turbo is on its way out already after only 6-8k miles I'd estimate.

As for the other question. I would be weary about adding additional restrictors to anything without checking 1. oil pressure to the line 2. the configuration of the oil return line (no kinks, 90 degree ANs, or restrictive drain lines, and 3. condition of the turbo itself. "seals" don't just "blow". You must do a lot more to determine that cause.
