You will get some smoke no matter what depends how much your getting?? It will either be the ring lands or you have cracked a piston. If it is bad you may blow your dipstick out of its hold, do a compression test..... But remember a little bit of smoke is normal, if its bad you will be using a lot of oil.

It is a pretty good amount. it almost looks like exhaust. My plugs are fine. I can not see any damage when I took off my valve cover. If I take off my oil cap when the car is running the smoke will come out of the hole where the cap goes.

Do a compression test!! it sounds like you have either cracked a ring land or piston.

When there was a "good amount" of smoke coming out of my crankcase breather/dipstick, I did a comp test and found one cylinder was normal, two were a little low, and one was extremely low. Turned out to be cracked #3 ringlands.

ok i did my compression test and I got #1 180, #2 180, #3 65, #4 180. Not happy with the results. I did a wet compression test on #3 and it stayed about the same. So what are the possible things that I will be replaceing? (valve, headgasket, piston, block...)

Well if you did a wet test on it (put a capful of oil in the cylinder) and did the compression check, and result was the same (65psi). You have a valve problem. Possibly a bent valve or sticking valve. Take head off and go from there.

I would tear it down and do a full build while you're at it, providing you have the funds.

I am taking the head off right now. Once I find out what is wrong I will decided what else to add to my setup.

I got the head off now what am i looking for. The cylinder wall looks perfect, the piston looks good from what I can see. The valves look all the same. The head gasket seems to be intact. What am I looking for???

I did the test where you add oil to the cylinder to see if it flows down into the oil pan quickly to test for a cracked ring and the oil did not flow down quickly. This would make me believe that it is not the piston ring. Any other ideas. So far I think it is either a blown Head gasket or a bent valve, but both of them look fine. Anyone else got any ideas.

Take a flashlight and shine it in the exhaust and the intake ports and then look around the edge of the valves that your shining the light in and see if you can see any light. This can help you see if the valves are bent. It helps if you are in a dark place when trying this.

Ok I am down to it either being the head gasket or the ring land. I shined the light into the intak/exhaust ports and I did not see it coming from behind the valve. The head gasket looked fine but i may be mistaken. I have not pulled the piston yet in cylinder #3 but I did the wet compression test on got the same compression as the regular compression test which would make me think that it is not the piston or the piston ring. I have done the test where you pour oil into the cylinder to see how fast is leaksdown into the oil pan and it did not go fast at all. It went the same as all the other cylinders. Does anyone have any further advice? If I pull the piston will I be able to just put it back in or do I need some additional tools? A pistons ring compressor? Thanks.

another head test, is to fill the #3 cylinder with water to see if any leaks down through the valve seat.

I am now sure that it is either the headgasket or the piston ring land.

This happened to me last week, same symptoms only on cylinder 2. I pulled cylinder #2 piston and the ring lands immediately fell into my hands. Luckily it did not gouge up the cylinder wall. My compression numbers were 175,50,175,175.

This is where you should take the extra time to pull and inspect all the pistons. I only inspected 1 piston and replaced only 1 piston and now i am stuck without a car and wasted $40 on a headgasket because #1 piston is now shot.

Good Luck

Mine is definatley the piston ring land. I pulled the piston and it was cracked in 4 places. It did not fall into my hand like yours but I am definatley replacing the pistons and while I am at it probabley going all forged with forged rods.
