Smallest Turbo???

I am building a go-kart engine, and I want to put a turbo on it. I was wondering what is the smallest turbo you guys have see/heard of, and where could I get one, junkyard possibly??

This is going on a very very small motor, a 3.5 hp briggs and straton if that helps, so I would need a very very small turbo to see boost anytime when it would be useful.

Thanks!!

is the motor fuel injected?

That would be neat if it works. It would be tough carburated though http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

the turbos on turbo sprints are pretty small , I believe they are IHI RHb3

Re: Smallest Turbo??? (HybridcivicLS-T)

It is carburated, but we are going to upgrade to a high-performance go-kart carburator, so we could jet it really rich. I am only hoping to get a couple pounds of boost, but that could easily triple the hp of the engine.

Any car turbos that would be suitable, I was thinking maybe a td04-9b off of a 3000gt, but i don't know how small those really are

the problem with putting a turbo on there is that the motor is what, 100cc at the most? A turbo sprint is 1000cc, so you are going to put a turbo on that was meant to be on an engine 10 times as large. It won't spool. The way to go FI on a small engine is supercharging it, merely because you can't find turbos small enough. The way to get a tiny supercharger is to use a "Smog Pump" from a large v8 engine...my friend and I were looking into doing this to a 3.5hp B&S, like you, but the project has been sitting in the garage for quite some time https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Thanks for the suggestions!! What exactly is a "smog pump" and how does it work as a supercharger?? Also, what engine could I get one off of, and where is it located on the engine??

Thanks!!

Smog pumps seemed to be on lots of 80's engines.

Not sure how they work however.

Re: Smallest Turbo??? (Briman2021)

I did a smog pump supercharger on a mini bike when I was in H.S. A smog pump or AIR pump (Air Injection Reaction) was a small air pump used in the mid 70's to the late 80's to help burn raw fuel in the exhaust before the CAT. THe idea was that if you introduced fresh air into the hot exahust, it would burn whatever fuel was left.

You should be able to find one on any domestic vehical from the 70's to the 80's. Just look for a round pump that has hoses hooked to the exahust mainfold.

FYI... I used a small mikuni carb from a 100cc dirt bike (kawasaki bush master) and I ran it as a draw threw system. I mated it up to a 8 HP Techumsa. It was a rather fun project. But I guess you can't do that kind of stuff in a H.S. auto shoppe anymore.

Re: Smallest Turbo??? (Dr Honda)

actually, we are doing this project for school. We are on the "super mileage car" team, which you try and get the best gas mileage with a 3.5 hp b&s engine. We are using the strategy of accelerate to the speed limit and kill it and coast. This works really well, and the winners last year were the ones who had to accelerate for the least amount of time, by having the most power/best gear ratios.

If we had a more powerful engine, and the right gear ratios we could theoretically only have to accelerate for 2-3 seconds and be able to coast for upwards of 1/2 a mile.

Last year we got over 600 mpg.
