Default Should I swap turbos? *Turbo Guru's check in*

Ok, one of our fellow HT members Marksaccord recently purchased a T3/04e .57 trim .63 a/r for his H22a turbo project. Unfortunately, we test fit it tonight and it will not fit with the manifold he is using...which is strange, because it's the same turbo I'm using. The only difference is trim, make, and exhaust housing, which his is a .57, mine is a .54, his is Garrett, mine is Turbonetics, his is four bolt exh housing, mine is 5. Finally, mine is ball bearing, his is not.

Although we have not compared them side by side, visually, these turbos appear radically different. We have fit my turbo to his manifold and it fits fine. His turbo is far too large - the compressor housing appears a lot larger, the outlet especially. It won't clear the front motor mount. The exhaust housing looks larger as well, but that could just be my imagination. I suspect it's possible he has a straight To4e. Hopefully, tomorrow we will compare the two side by side to confirm all this.

Ok, so let's assume it is in fact a T3/04e .57trim .63a/r. Assuming this turbo would fit and clear on my motor, do you think I should swap with him + some cash? My HP goals are about 375-400whp, would upgrading to this turbo be beneficial to me? My setup is listed in my bio. https://honda-tech.com/zerouser?cmd=viewprofile&id=4329

Many thanks to intelligent input.

What flange is on the manifold? If it is flanged for a T3, then markaccord's turbo shouldnt bolt up...if it is a true T4. Anyway if the turbo is a straight T4 you will have some serious lag, but of course it depends on the a/r, compressor blade, etc. Do you have any specs on his turbo at all? If your goal is around 400whp, then you will have to go with a pretty big *** turbo like a straight T4. You have to ask yourself...what is the purpose for your car...track monster, daily driver or in between. My is dual duty and my turbo specs are 57 trim, T3/T4OE, .63 a/r with a stage 3 compressor blade...full boost by 3500 and making 300whp at 10psi on stock block LS. The lag time on a straight T4 is usually 5000rpm tilll full boost for a standard size one...at least my friends track hybrid hatch spools at that.

actually I just checked the part number, and it matches a t3/t04e garret, just a bigger inlet. the specs on mine are 57 trim, 63 a/r, stage 3 wheel.

And you are having problems with the turbo hitting stuff? Hmm...what manifold do you have? My turbo is on a b-series and has plenty of room for clearance...i am using the max-rev manny.

That is true. Well your friends turbo fits i would say swap them. VaporTrail...if you are after 350-400 whp, then his spec turbo is perfect for you. With his specs you can support around 500hp. It is good compromise between daily driver and track monster turbo. I personally love it for my b-series. It is going on my built b16a very soon...the turbo pulls so hard on my LS block that is hard not to redline all the time...i miss that extra 2000 or so rpm that my b16a has over the b18b.

Looking at a compressor map it seems that the .57 would be a better choice for high boost applications. I know your going balistic on your motor so ofcourse high boost is in order here. I dont think the ball bearing upgrade is really worth it if you have a turbo thats not really suited to your combination of motorwork and tuning or trim choice. Thats my opinion. Do the swap.

It is possible to have different compressor housing castings.

Garrett makes em. Turbonetics has a few castings. Plus, You can machine a T04B housing (much smaller than a t04E housing) to fit with a T04E wheel. That picture of the turbo above on the DRAG H22/3 "elephant trunk" manifold has a T04B housing, but it could actually be a T04E OR a T04B.

Maybe you have a T04B housing John?

Ok, so we compared them today, the exhaust housings are identical. The compressor housing is *slightly* larger on the .57 trim Garret T3/04e compared to my .54 trim Turbonetics ball bearing T3/04e. It was enough that it would not clear the motor mount. My turbo DID clear the mount, so we went ahead with the trade. That turbo will suit him better than me anyway. Mark will be posting pictures soon so you can see the difference.
