Should I Change To This Trans To Better My Turbo?
right now i have my 97 civic ex trans in right now. My friend has a dx trans out of his 98 civic. Should I switch my ex trans out for the dx? Will it even work? I might be wrong and a noob, but i heard that the dx gear ratios are longer so therefore better for turbo. So if it's possible, do you think it's worth it?

Well this topic has been covered a million times. It's been discussed over and over and over, quite frankly most are tired of explaining and correcting the myths associated with the longer vs shorter gear ratio debate..and which tranny's fit which engines...
Quick question (this may answer your question)....
When most people add more power (be it forced induction or good old n/a) do they usually swap out their gears for longer gears or shorter gears?
If your looking for acceleration you want to run the shortest gears that you can without runing out of gear. Thats when you need to start runing longer gearing...
short gearing quicker acceleration lower top speed
longer gearing slower accleration higher top speed

Re: Should I Change To This Trans To Better My Turbo? (b16ahybrid)
Bottom line is, I wouldn't... I hate long gears even with turbo cars and I've covered it sooo many times that I'm just going to cut and paste again... If you feel like reading any of my input still feel free to browse through my posts on these links, hehe...

THIS IS IN THE B SERIES WORLD BUT THE SAME STILL APPLIES TO YOU...
It really depends on the slick/tire size you'll be running, how much power, etc... With anywhere from 350-550whp you can normally get away with 24.5-25" slicks at which time a GSR tranny would probably be your best bet... If you're making more power than that and want to run 26's I would try the S4C (B16), since you have a bit more rollout...
We've run a straight LS tranny (with Quaife LSD) on Duc's daily driven 700hp B18C/EJ6 in the past and though it brings in the power a bit smoother (only because it takes longer) it still breaks loose... Here's some OLD vids that I just loaded up again (GroundZero.mpg) that I did back in May of 2003 (all of the cars were slow back then since everything was new to us and we hadn't turned up the boost yet), Brian's car was making like 430 on 17lbs., now he drives it at 560whp on 24lbs. with a best of 10.90@136 (slow because he still has shitty traction off the line)... Anywho, you'll also see Duc's car that back then was only making ~500whp and had the LS tranny, though it's bottom end hadn't been tuned watch how the power hits... The second video clip Brian-Boost.mpg is a little more recent (during the summer) and is just Brian and me pulling onto the freeway... As you can see he's not taking it all the way up (shifting ~7-7500rpm where as normally we would go to 9500-10000 and let it tap off the limiter till it catches up each gear) and we didn't get anywhere close to full boost (only around 18lbs.) in 4th gear (note, we rolled around the corner in 2nd.)... I guess I forgot to meantion, Brian runs a straight GSR tranny with Q.LSD...
Right Click and Save Target As:
GroundZero.mpg [~51.4mb]
BrianBoost.mpg [~4.2mb]
I made this a few months before GroundZero.mpg but the main reason I put this up is because Brian started out with an LS tranny... Doesn't do too well just like Duc's car... Just my $0.02
PIR.mpg [~36.2mb]
