Running wide open exhaust, will this muffler help at all?
Ok heres the deal, i currently have 3" all from the turbo to the back, and it droopy dicks down into the ground right at the rear bumper, but as u can guess it sounds like a helicopter and needs to quiet down some. But i need a muffler and it cant be that expensive. i know people talk about the N1, but im not lookin that route, im talking more like a Apex WS lookalike, magnaflow, flowmaster or something like that, which ones do u guys recommend or which ones do u run? i know magnaflow has one thats 3"inlet and outlet, and its oval and overall length of 20". however it is a straight thru design and i cant see it quieting it down that much, what do u guys think?
sorry for the stupid topic, but im pretty much at a loss
Ps, keeping in mind also i dont wanna lose much power with the muffler, otherwise id just run my WS muffler in there.
thanx

fyi straight through doesnt necessarily mean louder. the resonator, size, muffler design, packing material, tip, etc. all contribute to the sound. i have an old school hks catback with chambered muffler and it is louder and has more resonance (smaller resonator) than my greddy sp which has a straight through muffler.
i say choose the model of muffler that you like the sound of, then get the largest you can fit as well as resonator. straight through is a must. those are what i will be looking for..

yea i figured straight thru is wat i need, however i cant exactly go test out different mufflers, and i dont wanna buy some straight thru muffler and have it change the sound absolutely none, thats why im asking on here, for opinions. im sure there are people on here running straight thru exahust on their turbo cars, and probably with just a muffler, cause i dont wanna hack the pipe up to put in a resonator. thanx

Edelbrock RPM
Great price, great sound (quiet), great design. I have one in 2.5" on my gsr turbo hatch, and my roommate has one in 3" on a DSM.

I have 2.5in piping and run a 18in magnaflow resonator and an es style magnaflow muffler. Both are very straight through and deepen the sound nicely.

thanx for the replies guys, my buddy with a chevelle is running a 3" inlet and outlet on his car, and they are hooker max flow or some crap. they seem about the same as magnaflow and are only about 60 bucks, what u guys think?

I have a Magnaflow 2.5" Oval. I think its a great muffler, it offers good performance, it's not loud and it doesn't look all ricey.

The Moroso spiral flow mufflers are supposed to be really good:

I've got the magnaflow resonator and muffler combo as well and the guys at the muffler shop (bunch of hacks) were surprised how quite it was without a cat. It's very quite.

Re: (Stu)
I've got a 3" dynomax muffler as a resonator, and a magnaflow 3" muffler...it's pretty quiet, not much louder than my Evo was. Just put it all together and I'm pretty happy with it.

are both the resonator and muffler both straight thru design, as in the baffles are only on the side? i really cant see a straight thru design muffler like a magnaflow or a hooker or something to quiet down my loud *** exahust that much...

Yeah, both straight through...no restrictions. The Dynomax was super loud...didn't seem to make much of a difference, when I added the Magnaflow, I couldn't believe how much quieter it was. Even the guy at the exhaust shop commented..."Damn, that sounds good for a Honda". He had made a comment earlier about how a 3" exhaust was overkill on a Civic...He didn't see the turbo.

haha nice, u remember which magnaflow it was? i know they make like 5x8 and 4x9 or something, u remember the model number by any chance? thanx, i think i am gonna go magnaflow. all i want is someting to suck up some of that ignorant resonance thats goin on, it gets rediculous when accelerating and ****.

99bluesi,
i want to get a greddy evo for my turbo si, and I was wondering why your switched? is that not a good exhaust. I currently have a greddy SP that needs to be replaced. I wanted to get a Greddy evo, but some people are saying the piping is too small for turbo, im only running 6.5psi

Re: (VspecSiR)
u need the larger diameter piping when it comes to turbo, no matter what. id recommend a custom setup unless u wanna dump the money for thermal or something...i love the way my car pulls so much harder just on 5psi goin from the WS to the 3"...now i just gotta pick out my muffler

Re: (ChillOutWayne)
I wanted a larger exhaust to help with the spool time. I also didn't really like the tip on my Evo...it sounded great, but it was a little large for my taste. The magnaflow I ordered was from http://www.Kteller.com It's the muffler labeled as ES style with polished tip. My guess is that it's the 5x8...and unfortunately, I used the box to ship a downpipe the other day. Looks great...sounds great...
