Default Running Lean...Are there warning signs when you boost is getting too high?

I've heard alot about running lean and detonation. I really would rather avoid detonation at this time, however as like most of you, I want power and therefore I'll probably push the boost up and up and up until I'm gettng close to the edge.

As the boost is increased by 1psi at a time will there be signs of possible detonation? I mean if I'm running at lets say 7psi with no problems, no odd noices and smooth engine vibrations, is there a good possiblity of detonaton at 8psi. OR will I know I'm pushing it?

This situtaion could just as easily be 11 psi to 12psi...when do you know enough is enough?

Any real advice from those poor souls who have gone over the edge and detonated would be benificial to me and I'm sure many many others.
