Default RPI Turbo Manifold Power Increase

recently we had a chance to do a bit of before and after dyno tuning with a standard tubular exhaust manifold and a close to equal length turbo manifold to see the difference in power

we had no issues at all with the sfp manifold that we had on the car but in order to get traction bars on the car we needed something that got the turbo to sit a little higher - we enlisted the help of john ward from RPI Racing to fab us a manifold and since we had a chance to get a before and after dyno comparison between the two we figured it would be interesting to see

these two runs show the difference between the sfp and rpi exhaust manifolds.....the blue line indicates the rpi manifold, the red line indicates the sfp manifold .....as you can see both are making about the same peak power, boost levels were the same for both runs but the rpi equal length manifold got the turbo to spool up a bit quicker and thus make pretty good gains in the midrange

ignore the cutting out of the graph on the rpi (blue line) - the dyno just missed on reading the spark for some reason on a couple of runs this day

check out http://www.RPIRacing.com for more and if you are interested in purchasing one don't hesitate to contact myself at james@titanmotorsports.com of john through his website

Excellent information James!

Did RPI do anything different to your specific manifold, or is that basically an off the shelf item?

45wtq MAX torque....try 100wtq a little earlier on @ ~5.3k, unless I"m reading wrong.

Makes a stong case for the equal length mani.

Nice difference, what boost level is that at?

That is an off the shelf item... you 'can' have it "Titan-spec" with the turbo and WG in the exact same orientation as they have it on their car ... otherwise, you can request custom orientations on both the turbo flange and the WG outlet

That manifold looks great. Awsome gains. Great job to RPI and Titan!

damn I need to get one of those manifolds......oh wait..

I do..hehehe
Actually I have the prototype...which john (spending way to much at the welder) has perfected the design and layout..but even though mine was the begining...it still serpasses pretty much any turbo mani out there in its price range. And who could argue with that?

ya those number are fantastic..great job guys.

99B16Si: I'm not sure, because i don't know what the logs looked like, nor do i know how conservative the tuner was being while retuning for this manifold, but the turbo that they have on the car is almost to the point of being maxed out already with the other manifold... a case could be made that the added flow from the manifold was allowing the turbo to spin up faster, which also pushed the turbo to its limits faster, thus the torque curve starts falling a tad bit sooner than it did before with the other manifold. This car could probably benefit from a bigger turbo since it has all that extra spool up front, and the turbo would carry more in the top end.... of course that is all speculation on my part since again, i don't know if the tuner was doing something more conservative iwth the timing up top or something else.... but it sounds like a good explanation either way hehe...

Jonny Black: Not only a prototype, but also a prototype for the 'compact' version of the manifold that is in Titans car... the one in JB's car sits as flush to the head as possible to allow its use in the cramped engine bay of a streetable CRX... the other manifold will also fit a CRX engine bay though... just depends on your space constraints.

ProjectSi2: Yea, that was a fun manifold to build... looked very different compared to most of whats out there... i just wish that i could have seen how it did, considering the car got sold before you could use it... LoL.

Good luck in Cordova Titan!

sure does. even tho this isnt truly equal length, it makes a strong case for merge collector manifolds.

what happened to your original designs RPI/john?

Geoff: Whats up man? Which designs are you talking about? I have the one on the Titan car, and the one that was on the car originally (the pic posted by ProjectSi2), a manifold that sits the turbo over where Hitechs manifold sits (but i doubt i'll ever build another of those.. hehe), and then the manifold on my own car, which is a one-off:

I did do one other manifold for a customer that was really close in design to the OBX manifold, but just a lot thicker material... and of course i do log manifolds as well... I know that i've messed around with a bunch of different designs on the computer, but i never made any of them... i do have the one-offs that i've done for a Prelude and a Tercel... i'm just trying to remember which designs you are talking about

Damn John, wish I knew how to weld like you man. This is better then advertisement, from two respectible business show proof of their product.

Makes me want to get a manifold and DP from you, whats the price for it?? It's gots to fit in my crx with full size rad. Just in inquiry, but the thought is there.

and no I don't want to trade my GS-R block for it . I believe I will build it or something but right now it's chilling at the crib.

Li, thanks for the compliments!... you have PM

And yes, i will trade you for the GSR bottom end if you decide to get rid of it... hehe

-Good luck to the Titan crew at Cordova this weekend!-

Geoff,

I'm surprised you'd call bluff on this dyno. I would think of all people you would be the first one to understand the increase in power a nicely built manifold would make.

I personally will vouch for both the craftmanship and workmanship of the manifold, along with guarenteeing that this dyno graph is 100% legit.
