Default Rod clearances too tight (Eagles/ACL race), bolt stretch method yields tighter clearance

Im having trouble installing Eagle rods on my B16a
I was measuring clearances with ACL race bearings using both torque (43lbft) and bolt stretch (.0055-.0059") methods. Using the torque method I get about .0015" clearance but with the bolt stretch method (Proform) it gets tighter to about .001 which is unacceptable.

Maybe the torque wrench is uncalibrated or the gauge is not reading correctly (I preloaded it about .15")

Any thoughts what could be going wrong?

I tried setting the plastigauge both over and under the journal and not moving it so it didnt smear.

measure the bore to make sure the rod is round w/o the bearing in it.

Ive had this happen twice both times with eagle rods. You can try honda reds but it will still probably be to tight. options are

1. get a crank with smaller marked rod journals

2. get the rods resized by a machine shop... I dont like doing this as i dont trust anyone to do it

3. try to send the rods back to eagle and get a new set

4. take the crank bearings and rods and have them measured with precision inside micrometers and see how off they are.

Get thinner honda bearings...

But definitely measure your journals and rod big-ends very precisely before ordering..

you need a bore gauge and micrometer that's accurate to .0001"

clevite bearings are typically thinner than acl's.. so try those. this isnt really uncommon

This isnt uncommon at all. Every set of rods that i use in my engines will always see the rod machine and i would have to say that probably 90% of them are off from where i need them to be.

His title says "ACL race".. so we can only presume that he is already using the HX race bearings... OP: yes? no?

First measure the clearance with some mics, to make sure where your at, before you go through all of the hassle. Resizing the rods will sometimes lose the crush that the bearings need when the caps are torqued down. You really need someone with the proper tools to determine if its ok to open the big end of the rods up.

I checked and rechecked using plastiguage about 6 times on both sides of the journal with the journal clean of any oil and I always get the same results. Im going to order a set of Hx bearings to see if it comes out better with those.

I know plastiguage isnt the mos exact method but the repeatability of my measurements make me belive they have to be right.

thanks
