RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
i have a turbo B18 in an eg, i love the power gains from it. but im concerned about the mechanical reliability of it. also, does it cause excessive engine wear? second Q, i have a straight 3" pipe w. no catalytic conv. and fumes are getting in the cabin. is that normal?? is it the turbo? or the fact that the cat is missing??

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
sounds like you're missing a gasket somewhere in your exhaust system, probably where the cat used to be if you have a test pipe in there.
|
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
well, thats what i thought at first but i looked and theres none. its a straight exhaust pipe with no cat, or muffler. just one long tube. it could be poor welding. i bought the car with that exhaust.

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
Is your dumptube from the waste gate recirculated into you downpipe? If not, that could also be the source besides a leaking exhaust.

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
If you aren't constantly in boost, there really shouldn't be any more stress on the engine. From what I've been able to gain, as long as you are boosting conservatively and have a good tune, you shouldn't have to worry too much.
I second the exhaust leak. |
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
im running a conservative 5 lbs.

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
ha 5psi is hardly testing that motor.
pull the exhuast off and check all the welds possibly re weld or replace exhuast |
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
B18B or B18C
These engines can handle decent power in stock form. Many push around 300whp daily with no issues. Obviously, the GSR engine is stronger, but at 5psi I don't think you have anything to worry about IF you have a solid tune. |
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
its the b18b, i wanted it as a daily driver. so with 5psi. and a gsr trans i think ill be able to get away most power without blowing the motor. but yea ima check the welds. a friend told me also to check my shifter. it may be coming in through there too.

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
There's supposed to be like 2 rubber seals around your shifter. They aren't expensive, like $15 together from Honda.

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
you run the risk of having too much fun with a turbo and the chance in getting your car towed and you goin to jail for speeding.
|
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
Have a friend hold a rag in the end of the muffler, with the car running. Then look under the car to see if you notice any exhaust gas coming out anywhere it shouldn't be. You should be able to hear the leak as well, if there is one.
As for the turbo/reliability thing, get your car tuned. |
Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
you will get a better response at the Forced Induction forum.

I can get from 100km/h to 200 km/h in about 6-7 secs, so before I pass the next intersection, I am already back at the speed limit...lol It is only those 300WHP heros that need a long stretch of road to pull any good speed to impress their friends...ROFL I go there, get the job done, slow down in a span of under 8 secs. |

Re: RISKS AND GAINS FROM TURBOING YOUR CAR
I believe the more power you have the worse wear and tear becomes. Same with heat issues which usually scale with increased power in just about any machine.
