Default ring of oil on exhaust

hey whats up guys.

i have been getting a thing ring of oil residue around my exhaust tip after i run it hard for a while. i do not get any blue smoke at idle or at wot. and the residue does not re-apear unless i floor it for a while at WOT. so i am wondering if this is something i need to worry about or not? it pretty much looks like a black ring on the inside of my exhaust tip.

i was thinking if its anything it has something to do with the turbo, maybe too much oil or some sort of small clog in the return line. because i figure if it was the engine it would be straight burning.

what do u guys think?

Are you sure it's oil and not just a carbon/fuel mix? Running rich will do that to you... just something to check out.

That is regular for a turbo car, they always run rich. If you had 'oil' in the back of your exhaust... trust me, you'd be smoking and you and everyone else around you would know it. If you ever do have oil in the exhaust, it is usually from the turbo's oil seals going bad. To check this, simply remove the downpipe and inspect for oil. If its dry, you are ok. Do the same for the intercooler piping, but usually IC pipes will have a THIN film of oil on them. That is normal.

Also, in the morning condensation will enter your exhaust and when you start the car all of the 'soot' will shoot out leaving marks on your driveway, so do not think this is oil.

Glad to know it's normal... since I have also really really thin layer of oil on my charge piping... not enough to make a single drop tho.

but if was the seals like u said there would be considerable smoking along with the oil residue... not just the residue itself, correct?

Yes. If there is any oil in your exhaust it is going to burn and therefore smoke. I'm just saying if you are that concerned then check your downpipe.

What if you've got oil slowly coming out in between where the exhaust manifold and downpipe/turbo connect? My car needs to be tuned right now, and its running rich for sure, because the smoke that is coming out of my exhaust right now smells like gas. I checked my compression yesterday, and its strong all the way across. I'm thinking its the valve seals just need replacing, because the head has 151k+ miles on it, and the car has been sitting for months now.

That usually indicates the seals on the turbo are going bad. I would check your shaft for play as well.

Odd, the turbo has less than 3000 miles on it though.
