rebuilding and cleaning a turbo
So I bought this turbo and it has shaftplay just enough to touch the blades but they werent damaged at all. So I took it apart and on the inside of the turbine there is this sand type of stuff in there covered with oil, what should I use to clean the stuff out? would engine degreaser harm anything in there?
also I need to get a rebuild kit for it where? I could not find it on their site...
its a turbonetics t3/t04E
here's some pics

Re: rebuilding and cleaning a turbo (Quad-Damage)
Its just carbon, nothing to worry about.
The seals are on the shaft and on the trust retainer, like a small metal piston ring. there are no rubber seals as such apart from the one you said about on the housing. Drop it all in a tub of petrol and leave it over night, should come off much easier.

Re: rebuilding and cleaning a turbo (sporty240)
It looks like coked up oil. Synthetic in the future will help with that.
I would use Automatic Transmission fluid to break it loose. It has solvents in it and will probably clean it well if you soak it overnight. Good luck.

All that carbon is coked oil from a leaky seal.
I just rebuilt my turbo (to4e 50trim)
At the least you need to check the turbine shaft for straightness.
I replaced all my bearings for $90 (360 thrust kit and the full float bearings)
Cost me $65 to get the shaft strightened and another $65 to machine out the ring groove (mine was smashed and had a ding in the seat)
It wasnt hard, and do far its fine (100 miles)

Re: (igy)
I also see a t04e in my future...57 trim. I like to know what the nut should be torqued to? Also, any good rebuild write-up with picture for this turbo specifically?
