Default Questions to ask when buying a built motor?

I might be picking up a 84mm Darton sleeved GSR block locally, and I'm wondering what questions I should ask before buying it.

It's got 9:1 JE pistons, Eagle rods, stock crank, etc. etc...it made 650whp on the dyno (race hatch), and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have that many passes (I'll have to double check with the seller). It was pulled running well, according to the seller. Reason for selling is he is parting out his race car.

What should I ask about the motor? I'm thinking:

- Any oil consumpion/overheating issues?
- How many passes on it exactly?
- Good oil pressure?

Any other questions?

Well the motor's already pulled out of his racecar, so I don't think that can be checked right now.

I think that if I buy it, my builder/tuner and I are going to disassemble it, re-ring it (get it honed if needed) and check all of the clearances. Then put it all back together again because I'm too **** to risk blowing this motor on a highway run in the middle of the night.

previous compression test numbers?

i would have him drop the oil pan so you can check the sleeves, pistons, rods, ect (alot of stories of hearing ppl buy ''built'' motors and then they arent''

dyno charts to see numbers made.

break in periods, how long, how did he do it, frequent oil changes? how many gaskets are new.

oil pressure, water temp (some blocks that are sleeved have been known to overheat due to closed decks)

i donno there are many things you want to know about it, but the major things is making sure it has what he says it does... peoples words are hard to take to heart becuase of the fact that people lie. (not saying he is going to lie)

I guess the blessing/curse with this motor is that it's a race motor. It's been pushed like crazy obviously (made 650whp back in '04, last time it was actually on the track), but it's only got race miles on it, which could equal all of 2-5 miles! I'd rather pick this up than someone else's street motor that's got 10-20k miles of street driving on it.

Great suggestions, anything else I should consider?

in all reality if you are going to be rebuilding the motor for your own safe sake.

i would say go with it, becuase its all going to be fresh and what he has down now to it, isnt really going to matter after you check it replace what needs to be replaced and rebuild it, so its really a win win situation

i would ask who sleeved the motor, dont want to have to worry about sleeves sinking.

Ask if you can take it to a machinist to check it out.. Thats what I would do.
