Questions about the Atmel AT29C256...
- Any idea how many times this chip can be burned before it takes a crap?
- What happens when it has been burned too many times.
I think this might be one of the reasons why my car is running like ****. Many of you know that my car was missing, and swapping in new plugs seemed to help.
Well I just took the car on three 3rd gear runs...and on the 3rd run it started breaking up around 7K just like it has been doing. Also my idle is all f'd up. It wants too run around 1500 when I have it set too 850. I'm pretty damn sure I don't have any vaccum leaks. It was running right around where I had it set before we took the car too the dyno (on the same chip). And another clue... Just for kicks, I got on the clutch cut that I have set for 4500...and it shot all the way too a steady 8000. Then I did it again and it was 4500.
This **** is really pissing me off.

They can be burned quite a few times. Not sure on the exact amount, but I have heard 100+ A chip I am running has been reburned at least 50 times. It should throw a solid CEL if it goes bad I think.

They can be burned quite a few times. I haven't had a chance to burn any one particular chip upwards of 50+ times, but out of the few dozen we've tuned, none has ever went bad.
What are the exact steps you take when you start a new burn? That might help explain a few things.

Amtel rates the AT29C256 at greater than 10,000 cycles. I doubt even the most tune-happy person out there is gonna reach that any time soon

If the car runs at all, 99% sure the chip isn't the problem The burner will verify the program was written correctly after burning, so if it didn't reach the chip correctly, it will be detected by the verification.

i burnt programs into mine quiet a few times
no problems.. and yes the ecu will trow a solid cel with a bad chip
plus like the prev guy said, the burner can verify it burned right

What's your timing set at? Just curious. What are you running for plug wires and distributor? Have you changed the cap and rotor? Im guessing you have.

Timing around 9psi would be about 22degrees.
New cap/rotor.
