Default Question for the turbo and exhaust experts

My question is regarding a big single turbo setup on a V setup engine.

I have been reading up on some of the mustangs that use a really big single turbo to power thier V8. The way the manifold is setup is wierd.

They have two equal length headers, then the other side of the manifold is bolted almost directly to the turbo placing it behind the drivers headlight. Now the other manifold has a long pipe from the passenger side then connecting to the turbo.

The question is doesnt the exhaust velocity slow down because it's traveling so far to get to the turbo? Or is it because the turbo is being spun by the other 4 cylinders that the remaining 4 just catches up and spools the turbo.

Here is a pic.

You see how the two pipes connects to the turbo behind the driver's headlight! It seems like a very far distance for the other bank of 4 cylinders to reach the turbo doesnt it?

Here is another pic but this time the turbo is on the passenger side.

can you guys see the other pipe that goes underneath the car and connects into a "Y" then into the turbo?

i'm not a turbo expert, but i've seen a stang with turbo mounted behind the fog light that ran 8's. I figure that by the time that car reaches full boost, the differences in length b/w the manifolds becomes negligable.

look at the manifolds and thier jet hot coated to keep the heat in.

heat in the pipes keeps the velocity up and turbo spinning. remember the heat is what turns the turbo the exhaust gas is somewhat a by product, tha more heat you keep in the more efficient the turbo will be

WRXs are laid out like that pretty much. Seems to work pretty well on that car

I see, so the better you keep the heat the less important the length of the tube is...nice..thanks guys.

I am currently working on a single turbo on my 1UZFE motor and hoping will work.

For the newer LandCruisers yes, but mine is the one in the LS400.

The foot of extra pipe required for the passenger side header isn't going to make any difference in turbo spool, but it isn't realy going to be a big deal on a car like that anyways. Judging by the size of the crossover and headers I'm going to say that's a car running a 90+MM TV-Frame turbo. Also, since he's running an in-dash intercooler you can tell its a hardcore race car, not to mention the wastegate on the charge air side of the turbo. A lot of small-tire turbo guys running in classes where boost controllers arn't allowed (the one that comes to my head is SSO) run a wastegate on the charge air side of the turbo to bleed off the compressed air to reduce power off the starting line, traction control of sorts. It's controlled with CO2, it lets them run less boost off the line so that the car will actually hook on 28x10.5W tires, and then the wastegate closes sometime probably around 100-150 feet downtrack to give full power and boost where traction isn't as big of a deal.

is that a wastegate on the charge pipe right before the throttle body?

you were probably typing your post when boosted92 posted his, he actually answered your question about the wastegate placement.

There are a few LS400 owners that are actually doing a turbo setup to thier cars.
One guy did a 2JZGTE swap in his LS400, another did a supercharger setup using a Procharger unit, and another doing a single turbo setup. Which I am doing as well.

Room in the engine bay is very limited and that is were probably most of the trial and errors are going to happen.
