question for best transmission for turbo single cam?
Hello so I'm in need of a new transmission for my sohc-t, I want to know what's the best transmission I can use for my car? I want to also know what's the best tranny for drag too?

Re: question for best transmission for turbo single cam?
how much power are you pushing? and is the motor built?
EX would be good for just a bolt on kit,
but if you are running higher boost on a built motor, you could benefit from an HX transmission (with enought power) i only say this, because the gears are longer, and you can stay in boost longer, but if you are only around 250 hp or so you will see better times with the EX. but if you are up there over 400 or so. give the HX a try, its still a big bearing case so you have the strenght of the EX but you can stay in a single gear longer and take advantage of higher power.

"Stay in boost longer" is a misconception. There is no benefit to it whatsoever. You will be slower with a taller geared transmission.

Thanks for some good info. I have the s20 in it right now. I'm pushing 300 at about 17 psi I haven't gone to the track yet but with the old set up I had it went 12.7 and spinning all the way down the track. Is there a tranny with 1-2 short and 3-5 semi longer? Kinda like a ls tranny but for a single cam.

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: question for best transmission for turbo single cam?
Your only options are to either mix and match yourself or to purchase a gear set from somebody like "MFactory". Either way, if you are having a hard time putting down 300whp, your setup isn't great and you can't drive very well. For drag racing you want to size your tires correctly with the gears and RPM limit to get you at the line without shifting right before. There is a lot that goes into a solid setup - not just money. If you are having problems with throttle control, you should look into a DX Trans.

FYI, the EX/Si trans is pretty similar to an LS trans gearing wise. How many really fast cars run an LS trans...
If you can't put down 300whp or less you need to take care of traction first then worry about the trans. Unless you're on street tires even an LSD or spool won't help much there so figure out what the issue is and take care of it.
That said, I've found the MFactory 3.083 1st gear, 4.5 FD, and helical LSD work best for most of my customers. Some run the 4.7 on 24.5's. I wouldn't recommend the 4.9 for boosted drag setups with 300+whp.
