Default Question about spool on T3/T4 57 trim

Im running a T3/T4 57 trim (Garrett) on my Y8. Stock cam, 9:1 compression. Spool time seems a little on the high side. Its OK in first, but if I am not real quick on the 1-2 shift, it lags a good amount and takes a moment to "catch up". I'm comming from a GT28R Edelbrock kit I used to run on 15psi.... which I am sure you can guess had much quicker spool times. Is this normal spool time for this size turbo? It seems to make good power at 10psi, I would say comprable to the Edelbrock setup on 15psi.

You don't have a video or even an approximation of rpm? They don't spool the fastest. I think full boost 24lbs on my 1.6 bseries car was between 5500 and 6000.

.48 or .63 a/r?

the .63 will be a little laggy on the single cam engine. the .48 should be a pretty good match.

I would say I am looking at 5,000 to 5,500rpms myself. Its not horrible, just that between shifts can bring some pretty decent lag. I have an electronic boost controller but would still like to cut down some lag. Perhaps a new camshaft? Increasing the RPM range would certaintly help a good amount.

Run more boost. Sounds cliche but initially when I was running 7psi on that turbo with my B20 I wasn't too impressed. Ok it was my first boosted setup so I was really excited lol. Cranked it up to 15psi... : ) I dunno. It doesn't spool the fastest but then again was your GT28 a BB turbo? My was journal bearing so I didn't expect much. I hit 17psi by 5200-5500 in second depending on traction with an RS transmission (worse then an LS). People always passed me off the line and through second. By the end of 3rd I would have 2-3 cars on them. What transmission are you currently running?

PS - this was with the .63 hot side.

let the rev limiter bang a little on the 1-2 shift let the car gain some mph so it wont bog

This is not wise. That will not help response. It's a placebo effect.

it helps keep the car from bogging from the 1-2 shift expecially if your tires are spinning

It also stresses the valvetrain, hurts your accleration, and will negatively affect your torqueband. You simply can't physically expect a sub 2.0 litre engine to take something 50lbs/min and make it perform as though it were on a duramax.

If that's what you feel helps your car, that's fine, but that is not the way to help the turbocharger respond in the torqueband that is needed. that causes a lot of undo stress on the components with little effect. Heh. even my brother used to simply stay in second gear, keep traction and have a better torqueband than guys who would "bounce" between the first two gears.

A big name drag company can also afford to replace these valvetrain components more readily and easily than your average owner. What you're also hearing is more than likely a pre-ignition (2 step) prior to the car leaving the starting line, unless you're referring to something else. The "big names" use a liberty or PPG transmission that doesn't bounce off the limiter at these gears, and have a smoother transition when going through all gears.

Big name drag companies use their racing experience to help with R&D for the average consumer in the way of products, advice, technical assistance. But you never want to mistake that just because you use the big drag company sponsored part, that you can treat your car the same way as they do. They do that for a living, while you still go to your other job every day, as this is a hobby.

I've assisted a few of those very same teams in turbo configuration for a few years...I'd hope I know what I'm doing too at this point ;-).

shodan.. your misunderstanding him

he is stating to ride out first gear more since most likely its just spinning and he is short shifting it and shifting into 2nd gear at a lower than optimal speed

Im in full boost by about 5k rpms with my 57 trim on my B16. Sounds like you are just power shifting into second, riding your rev limiter and by the time you finally hook your still only going 25 mph. Of course your gona lag. Learn how to drive.

Glad you're able to. That means you can spend to repair the car like the "big boys" too, right?.. ;-). Understood on the misinterpretation, but you were rather cryptic in your explanation.
