Precision 5031e vs the new Precision 5531
Hey guys, I'm going to be changing turbos soon.
I got a good deal on a used Precision 5031e, but I was told it had ~50k miles on it and it had been disassembled by some local shop who tried to do a rebuild and I guess couldn't. I should have that turbo in my hands in a day or two, to see if it can still be rebuilt or not.
As I was researching alternatives I couldn't find much within my budget ($800) that would suit my build. Right now I'm running a Mitsubishi 16G that's internally gated, but I'm switching manifolds and going with an external wastegate setup. My new manifold is T3 and the o2/downpipe takes a 5 bolt exhaust housing.
I was planning on getting the Precision 5031e rebuilt if it gets here in good enough shape and just using that. But as I was looking for other turbos I noticed on the Precisions website that they had the new Precision 5531 released last month.
I can't find any info about it being that it's newly release but I figured some of you guys might be able to give me a little insight on how it would preform vs my 5031. Since I'm new to aftermarket turbo builds I'm don't fully understand how to translate spec sheets into real world applications.
The 5531 I'm assuming is a bit larger at 55mm vs the 5031 which is a 50 trim.
The 5031e I got coming has a .63 AR, if I were to order a 5531 with a .48 AR would I be able to swap exhaust housings between the two in order to see which I like better or would the housings not be interchangeable?
The way I see it the difference between getting the 5031e rebuilt and buying a new 5531 is only ~$200. So the cost difference isn't much I'm just wondering if this newer turbo will out preform my older model one.
