Please Help B16 Turbo Motor Noise
So I just got my car back together and it is starting to me a very unconstant rock pebble noise sounds like little rock or something is bouncing around in the motor. the noise only starts to happen after the car is fully warm
First the car starts to idle surge and then make the noise.
At first we thought it was the head but we had a shop check out the head and everything was fine.
The weird part is if we hold the throttle at basically anything higher then idle the noise goes away.
My last guess is it has to something with the oil like the motor is getting enough and im having metal on metal contact some where making the noise.
my oil pressure is reading around 25-35 at idle. so there is pressure there
if anyone has run into this problem or thinks they know whats going on please help!!!

Yeah it has cp 9.1 and eagle rods acl bearings
but when we pulled the head there was no marks of piston slap
and when we hold the motor at a higher rpm then idle the noise goes away wouldn't that make a louder slap?

Re: Please Help B16 Turbo Motor Noise
commonly sounds caused by vibration in idle disappear when hold the throttle at higher RPM's. Maybe this is your case!! Check for possible vibration sources. i.e. Dumptube, exhaust piping or something real close that make noise when vibrate.
A fully warmed b series at idle 25-35 oil psi is normal.
If you where having issues with low oil and metal friction believe me your engine will not still running.

Its a rattle caused by something rubbing/vibrating. Jack it up in the air, hold it at a steady rpm where the noise is made and start poking your head around until you find the source. Exhaust rattles are very common, squeaky belts, AN hose rubbing, loose bolts can also rattle, I've even had the hood prop rattle before.

Re: Please Help B16 Turbo Motor Noise
Okay let me be more clear its not a rattle its like a tick noise very random and sometime loud and then sometimes not loud
It is for sure coming from the block!
The head was taken apart and checked looked good there was no scoring on the pistons
Bearings looked good, The noise sounds like a little rock bouncing around in the motor but there is no rock in there lol

I had this problem on my ep3, it turned out that the cat's heat shield was rusted thru and rattling arround. It sounded exactly like what you are describing and it drove me crazy trying to find it haha, I would suggest looking for loose bolts or anything else that could rattle around.

Re: Please Help B16 Turbo Motor Noise
The Noise is for sure coming from the motor nothing is lose or rattling this is not a rattling noise,
the noise sounds like those white things u throw at the ground that make a pop noise when u were a kid lol
but its in the engine..... and it is very inconsistent

The fact that its inconsistent would rule out any kind of physical contact inside the block because that should be consistent with each revolution. Ie rod tapping bottom of sleeve or girdle, or thrust bearing, or loose rod bolt etc.
This is one of those things that nobody can help you without actually hearing the car.

Re: Please Help B16 Turbo Motor Noise
What about the speed or frequency of the tick. Does it speed up with engine speed or does it remain constant. Also the crankshaft rotates twice as fast as camshaft a ticking noise with a higher frequency would most like come from the bottom end. Also monitor oil pressure when the ticking starts. A drop in oil pressure would indicate that clearances are getting larger or oil pump not working correctly.

I currently have a very similar issue. I recently took my head of my b18c turbo to change the head gasket. Once I put everything back and started the car.. str8 away you could hear this noise on idle. It’s like a rattling noise. But as you give it a bit of gas the noise goes away.
