Piston Ring Install Question
I got my pistons back from the machine shop after having them bore the block, and I had them install the rings since I didn't have an expander. I've read in on of my engine building books that the wavy "oil separator" ring needs to have the end gap with the V's facing upward so that basically the gap looks like this VV VV instead of ^^ ^^. However 3 of my pistons have the gaps facing downward.
Is this something that I need to have redone, or does it not matter in your experience?? This is my first build, so I want to make sure it's done right. I have the pistons with me and was planning on taking them back to the shop to have them redone, but I wanted to check with people on here first. Thanks! |
Re: Piston Ring Install Question
I don't think it matters which way the expanders face but I'm not an expert. What brand are the pistons? Call the manufacturer.. Better to trust them than some random advice here that could be wrong.

Yeah, I'll call Supertech. They've been AWESOME so far with customer service! Thanks for the reply back.

Re: Piston Ring Install Question
Just like I said! AMAZING customer service! Called directly and just talked to someone. Those rings are non-directional so they can be placed either way, so I'm OK.
The top two rings have a marking that is facing upward (marking says N50 I belive for the part number), so I believe those are alright also (forgot to ask them). Everything I've read so far states this (marking facing up). Thanks for the help though E85B18! |
