Default Pics of internal WG restrictor plate and 2.5" downpipe from Jotech

argh look at the light amount of rust already. thats what i get for not painting it right away...

awesome welds huh? :-D

i made this plate to make some backpressure so the internal WG would function properly. I used a Greenlee punch for the center hole. Worked GREAT! I will probly enlarge the hole slightly to get better performance. but at some point the system goes unstable and too free flowing to regulate boost (internal WGs just suck).

Thanks to Tony at Jotech for the nice DP.

those do look like tony's welds.
they are perfect as usual
my dp has tony's signature stamped all over the welds!

nice setup btw.

What happened to as free flowing as possible for a turbo? Is this just a temp solution?

yes this is just a temp solution read my responses to you and later comments to see why i will use the restrictor plate temporarily until i port the wastegate by hand. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=372899 its an excellent temp solution that has me safely back on the road

Joe,

That plate you made goes between the discharge flange and the downpipe? Damn, that hole looks tiny. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a larger downpipe?

yup i am following you jalopy. i am not adding material to my turbine housing though.

i am shocked that i was the 1st into this territory, but oh well its fun solving this, especially with so many people interested and offering ideas and stuff.

AHHH! Not on the housing you big silly. ON THE FLANGE! Custom F-L-A-N-G-E No welding to cast iron!! At least you read it. You, FredoSP, and Boosted97Lude are the ones who inspired us.

Joe,

I guess I was under the impression that you installed the Jotech DP and the restrictor at the same time. It seemed weird to me that you'd get a larger DP and then immediately put a restrictor in it vs just keeping the stock Greddy DP.

That seems like nice way to control boost. I'm wondering if the same end could be reached by using a restrictor plate farther down the stream. Like, maybe at the exhuast tip or something? Maybe cap off your 3" system with dx muffler?

Hey Joe. I'm not getting this. Did you say, boost was creeping after the 2.5" dp install? Did you experience boost creep or spike in every gear? At what boost level is the wastegate set at assuming your using a boost controller.

You also mentioned somewhere that you disconnected the actuator arm and idealy, you would see 0 boost. How are you determining that the wastegate is fully open, not to see boost but in your case, it shot up to 8psi? Is it possible that Greddy's internal wastegate specs is hitting solid 8psi, regardless if the actuator arm is diconnected or not?

Just wondering.

yes

yes

no boost controller, wg was set to about 7psi which is what i now get.

the WG flap is laying down leaving the port wide open. its not like an external WG which is more like a plunger/valve. its more like a round door or flap. and yeah i would see 8psi with it wide open. it was actually spooling to some crazy boost level.

Is it possible that Greddy's internal wastegate specs is hitting solid 8psi, regardless if the actuator arm is diconnected or not?
um i dont know what you mean. all i know is that you need some restriction with an internal WG as it works on a different principle than an external WG.

i did not know this going into the project. oh well. i am very happy with the response and power characteristics of the car as it is now. time for intercooling so i can run more timing in boost

boosting to 12psi+ uncontrollably was fun and was bad cause it gave me a taste of how you can get greedy and keep upping the boost but i dont have a motor rebuild budget. ...when 3rd gear pulls like 1st at 90mph....oh baby

Not sure how identical our setup is, but to tell you the truth, I've never experienced any boost creep before and after my 2.5" dp intalled. It held boost in every gear. However, after I installed a manual boost controller and set the boost level to 9psi, I did experience a slight boost creep in first gear, reaching up to .7 bar prolly at around 5k rpm and goes back to .6bar (9psi), and it just hold boost again in every gear.

Do you have a 3" catback exhaust system?

i have 2.5" downpipe and goes to 3" flex pipe and 3" all the way back. minimal restriction.

what do u have for a cat? maybe thats restriction enough to resolve this?

No cat. I have a 2.5" straight pipe and a 2.25" Greddy SP catback exhaust. That should create enough backpressure to hold boost.
