Default PeakBoost Customer Appreciation Day w/ FREE Tuning by Ken Peak

I figured I'd swing by and post this here too. I just copy pasted my thread from ClubRSX and figured I'd spread the invite to you guys as well; after all, this is a K-Series day in all reality!

PeakBoost RSX customer appreciation w/FREE tuning by Ken Peak
04/17/10
10:00AM- till?

So, I’m sure you’ve all seen Flanz’s thread, which as named by Innovative MotorWorks is the “FailBoost” thread, if you haven’t, well here’s some info. The lead tuner from IMW has made a claim that PeakBoost manifolds have a design flaw that creates uncontrollable boost creep. Well, Ken Peak had offered to come out to Carlisle, PA to visit IMW and prove that it was not a design flaw, but rather a tuners flaw, and that the issue was compounded due to tuning issues. Things didn’t work out with those plans, but Ken is now coming to visit Baltimore, Maryland on his own to support his customers and host a customer appreciation day.

Now, on to the details…

When: April 17th, 2010 @ 10:00AM till whenever!

Where: Absolute Pro-formance
3306C Baltimore Blvd.
Finksburg, MD 21048
www.absolutepro-formance.com
410-526-DRAG

Why: Ken has offered to fly out to Baltimore to prove that there is no issue with his manifolds, as well as offer his thanks to all of us as PeakBoost customers. He would love to see some of our setups in action on the dyno. Ken is going to be passing out some shirts, he is raffling away a k-series manifold and will be tuning cars in junction with John Schill of Absolute Pro-formance for FREE (dyno time only).

With all this being said, as many of you know I have purchased a kit to go along with Ken/John and prove that the issue is with tuning, not the manifold. Absolute and I will be unveiling my car on the dyno here on this day, my build is finally going to be coming to an end.

This day is open to all, we would like to have any and all RSX owners here, and any other enthusiasts no matter the make/model. So please, come on out, meet Ken from PeakBoost and check out Absolute Pro-formance. If you have any questions, feel free to post here.

As stated; Ken/John will be tag-teaming the tuning of cars for FREE; however, dyno rental will be applied at the rate of $75/hr. If you want to be added to the list of cars to be tuned please add yourself to the list here and either myself or John @ Absolute will PM you.

Cars to be tuned:
1- Charisma
2- eghatchtech
3- bloodworks666
4- nova k20
5- k20a2_power
6- mockerblah!
7-
8-
9-
10-

Other goodies- Absolute will have free food and drink at the vicinity as well as door prizes; not to mention Ken is raffling off the FREE K-Series turbo manifold. More information to be released as the day comes closer!

ANYONE INTERESTED IN GETTING ON THE DYNO OR HAS ANY QUESTIONS PM ME HERE OR EMAIL ME @ kurtfelmar@gmail.com

Anyone needing a place to stay at a hotel or anywhere, feel free to contact me and I can see what I can set up for you.

How does a tuner cause boost creep ?

Agreed. Creep is caused by hardware, i.e. manifold and wastegate not the tune

ya that doesnt make too much sense,

maybe the tuner is like, putting -6 ignition in the table at high rpm, so the fuel just blows right into the turbo, and the wastegate cant control it, lol

Or unless all those people are using pwm boost control, in which case it can creep if not tuned properly

No creep on a peakboost manifold?

Teach me...please.

Although it seems like i've had great luck with their newer ones.

to clarify, usually its not that the tuner is trying to "cause boost creep", I think its more a situation of tuners being overly conservative with their timing and fuel maps. My goal in this is to help everyone achieve the same results, being that the only true variable is the human that is running the laptop. all of our parts and I'm sure our competitions parts come from the same fixtures and are mirrors of themselves.

--
overfueling and too much ignition retard can cause somewhat of an antilag scenario in the exhaust manifold, which create a much larger exhaust gas energy that will overduty the wastegate and continue to "spool" the turbocharger.

here's an example of an ignition map that was "tuned to creep":

with the timing values cascading off in the load columns that are not to be used, the interpolation of the ecu will cause the next load column to come into play from excessive timing retard or if the protections are set, the boost cut will hit as soon as the set max boost is hit.

with overboost protection, the higher load columns will only come into play with interpolation and should significantly lower #'s beyond the targeted load column will allow for "boost creep" or again if overboost protection is set, a boost cut.

in fact, here is a boost plot of a GT37R RSX type-s that I tuned using this same theory:

the "creeping" yellow line was before tuning, just on the spring pressure(small yellow spring). as you can see, the boost is held flat once the map is fully tuned along with the boost by gear tuning.

I have also helped "retune" some of these via Email using the same procedure.

hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions.

Very well may be the case; as a matter of fact, I know it is... A few of my friends have gone through Derek and a few others have been tuned through J-K. I speak with Derek through facebook and PM's fairly often. This is by no means a personal attack on them, this is just Ken defending his own product and some loyal customers doing the same.

As of now the free tuning is for peakboost k-series only. The event itself is, obviously, open to all!

Quote from other thread showing tuning vs manifold issue...

knock count is not the best way to monitor knock and with noise the narrow spectrum factory knock sensor will read knock count if the timing is retarded too much..
the most accurate way to monitor knock is to view its operating voltage(ie-Knock Level as kpro names it). this is a 0-5v sensor that shows more voltage(resistance) as the actual noise increases.

__________________________________________________ ______________

heres a datalog of a "creeping" tune that allowed boost cut, set at 13psi on a 8 psi spring on a standard T3/to4E.

since most here don't have Kmanager to read the file, I've screen captured it

you can see here that the boost is at 8psi, timing at 21*, 0 knock count, 1.35v knock level(2.5v being the threshold)

more rpm, same timing, same boost, same knock count and level still...

as the ignition timing is retarded from 21* to 14* you can see the direct relation to the boost"creeping"

and finally, the ignition timing is lowered even further to 10* final advance which has exacerbated the "creep" issue even further, causing the tune to hit boost cut 13psi. also, notice that the knock level(v) has shown any increase, however the knock count is 2... "phantom knock" from an "antilag" type situation.

figure this will help most to better understand

here is the Hicam ignition map that was sent to me to match the datalog:

13psi/10*final advance is not creep...

I sent him 3 revised trials for datalog and feedback. ultimately he contacted me because he was looking to hold 10psi on his 8psi spring

this is what we came up with:

10psi flat, as can be seen from the rpms no longer "ramping"

with the ignition values properly tuned the boost held perfectly

boost cut protection was set to 11.5psi

also, here is Bloodworks666's "tune" that is causing his "creep"

"tuned" by Morgan@ synapse right?

and while D-rob from IMW didn't post Flanz's datalog, here is his "tuned to creep" hi cam ignition timing table as well:

Ken, while you on the east coast, would you mind replacing the EG charge piping from 4 years back that did not fit at all?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So, when a tuner can tune a car that has a full-race manifold without 1 single issue at all such as creep no matter the size of turbo, wastegate, etc... How comes there seems to be an issue with the PB manifolds that plenty of well known and respected tuners have issues with..?
