Default Passing Emissions with FMU

I am wondering.. Since FMU pushes in more gas than needed, it would be running rich. Wouldnt that fail the emissions test? How do people get through this?

during the road test (obd1)

the motor should never see boost. the fmu only adds fuel under boost so you should be fine. if you are really worried about it, pull the wastegate spring before you head to the emissions place

all they do for obd2 is plug up a scanner to the ecu port and check your gas cap. as long as your battery hasnt gone dead, the ecu hasnt been unpluggedv or oyu havent thrown any CEL's you should be ok

If you live in CA you'll have a problem because as soon as they pop the hood your fucked. In IL like me I have researched this quite a bit and came up with 3 solutions to my upcoming EPA test.

1.) Qualify for Race car status. Basically there are no set rules to this (strange I know). You can drive as many miles as you want and can go anywhere, the problem is how they check for it. All they want are pictures of your car to "prove" that is look slike a race car, but how easy is that. Just take pictures of your turbo, gut out your car a little and add some stickers of something. I asked the person what I needed to take pictures of and they said to take pics of the NOS bottle and stuff. It didn't sound like they knew what they were talking about so my idea would be to take pics of anything and everything that'll make it look "race like"

2.) Do not go on the rollers if you have "expensive rims" - If you claim that you have expensive rims and you don't want to risk scratching them you can ask the manager for you not to be placed on the rollers. They will then just idle your car and still stick a probe in you pipe. At idle though you create much less emissions and even with your FMU and no CAT you should still easily pass if you car is running ok.

3.) If you spend over $450 to repair for a failed emissions test you no longer have to pass emissions EVER AGAIN. If you fail the test you should go to a mechanic that you "know" and ask him to "repair" your car and just print out a reciept for over $450....then if you so happened to fail it again, just show the reciept and you are then exempt for life for all emissions for life......get it

disclaimer for the cops and EPA people out there: I in no way advocate the use use of these laws to find a loop hole to truely pass emissions

Just disconnect the vacuum line going to the fmu or, put a plug in the line and return the line to the fmu. It worked for me. If the car is on the rollers the car will see boost. The rollers I have experienced applied a constant load regardless of the rpm.

adseguy. where do you go about sending these pictures. who do have to call, etc. Maybe i can pull this off where i live. because there is no way i can ever get my car to run on the stock ecu or injectors, lol

Interesting...anyone want to verify this? I thought it was just 15mph and 25mph with no load, but I was just assuming

no the rollers put a constant load on the motor. its kind of like what we do with our race bike dynos. we load them up at a given rpm then roll WOT and verify the afr's etc

You need an affidavid (spelling is probably all wrong ...it's spelled phonetically..lol) Check on your state's web site for EPA. I was able to download it. I also called and that's how I got all the info. Anyone should be able to pass with no CAT if your car is tuned properly at idle. Just lean it out a little and voila.

well i have an odb2 car. we dont get the roller or sniffer test. just the ecu check and gas cap check.

but im not going to be running in the obd2 configuration. so i guess i need to go find out about this "race car status" do you know if it affects your insurance in any way?

from the form I read, no, but I may be wrong. Look into I haven't tried this, but it gave me ideas. I'mopting for option #2 and if that fails #3 is even easier.

if you do this and your car sees boost than what is adding more fuel if the fmu isnt hooked up?

it will just lean it out like hell and possibly blow then engine.

no.. because if you pull the line off of the fmu. you are driving the car gently and not boosting. they dont beat the **** out of your car for the road test

See now I thought that too, but since someone mentioned loading on the rollers doesn't that mean they are going to possible spool a smaller turbo. Just tryin to get some info, thanks!

Option #3 is here: http://www.cleanairforce.com/passing2.htm#6

Option #2 can work if you have the tunning tools and non-stock rims

I couldn't find anything on option #1, but there were a lot of extension forms you could use. GL

^^^ you know I used to hate being OBD2, but now I'm beginning to love it!

swap out my ECU/injectors, pull the wastegate spring, and drive around for a bit, and I should pass no problem! Then swap it back and be boosting again in no time.

Just need to get my wastegate dumped back into my exhaust sometime soon.

Here in AZ on an obd1 vehicle. (Not port for the plug) They put your car on rollers. They get it up to about 50-60 miles an hour on the roller. If you have a small turbo. You'll see boost. Plain and simple.
